5 Best Camera Phones 2013

Featured

I remember the day when a mobile phone was simply that, a phone. Then came the introduction of coloured screens, and eventually came the integrated camera. Over the past 15 years mobile phones have evolved drastically, and are now a huge part of our everyday life. One feature of the mobile phone that has continued to evolve and innovate are the cameras.

But what is the best Camera Phone on the market today? This post will look at 5 of the best camera phones available today and explore their pro’s and con’s.

1. HTC One X

HTC One X Smart Phone

The HTC One X has two cameras, a rear facing 8 Megapixel lens and a front facing 1.3 Megapixel lens. The handset itself is rather large and this can cause problems when trying to operate and hold the camera steady for a shot. The One X is extremely user friendly, allowing you to quickly get the hang of taking pictures and editing them. It also comes equipped with a number of shooting options such as panorama, High Dynamic Range (HDR), auto shooting as well as a large number of preset effect filters similar to those found on the popular App Instagram. You can chose from a range of image resolutions, as well as the ability to manually adjust the ISO and white balance. Photos are crystal clear and pack a lot of punch in terms of colour and vibrancy.

2. Samsung Galaxy S3

Samsung Galaxy S3 Smart Phone

The Samsung Galaxy 3S, like many of its competitors has an 8 Megapixel camera and is a similar shape and size to that of the HTC One X. Two features I liked about the Galaxy S3 were the best shot feature, which allows you to choose the best of 8 rapidly shot photos, and the face recognition feature, which can recognise faces using your contacts list, this is a great feature for those that share a lot of photos on social media channels. The handset boasts one of the largess screens out there, ideal for composition and shot review. It also features a wide range of built in effects that are fun and easy to edit. However the Galaxy’s screen is extremely sensitive and this can lead to selecting settings by accident.

3. Nokia 808 PureView

Nokia 808 PureView Smart Phone

The Nokia 808 PureView literally blows all camera phones out the water in terms of amount of Megapixels, boasting a whopping 41 Megapixels! The handset itself is shaped more like that of a compact digital camera making it very comfortable to hold and shoot with. On a downside the PureView is a little clumsy to operate when navigating the various features and shooting options. That said the quality of the photos once downloaded to a desktop computer are up there with decent compact cameras. Colours are rich and sharp giving the photos a true to life appearance.

4. i-Phone 5

i-Phone 5 Smart Phone

So there was a lot of hype surrounding Apples new i-Phone 5, but has it lived up to it? The i-Phone 5 is the thinnest and lightest of the series so far, and benefits from an 8 Megapixel isight camera. The most noticeable difference is the 4-inch Retina screen which delivers an outstandingly bright, crystal-clear screen resolution. Photos look good, and video can be shot fluently in HD. Like other phones, the i-Phone 5 features face recognition and auto focus functions. Downsides include a more basic range of camera options that its rivals, and battery life is dramatically affected when taking or reviewing photos.

5. Sony Xperia S

Sony Xperia S Smart Phone

The Sony Xperia S boasts a 12.1 Megapixel camera, which is more than the average pixel count among smartphones which is 8 Megapixels. Two features that stand out on the Xperia S is the sweep panorama shooting mode which allows you to create impressive panoramic photos simply by sweeping the phone along your scene in one shot. The second feature is the touch shutter function, which allows you to direct the cameras focus and capture certain subjects simply by tapping the screen on it. A downside is that the display screen is cropped by the functions tool bar, limiting the amount of your subject that you can see in real time, also we found that the placement of the camera makes it very easy for finger tips to spoil photos.

Best Camera Phone of 2013

The best Camera Phone of 2013 is the Nokia 808 PureView. The quality of photo that you can produce with the cameras extremely large 41 Megapixel sensor are incredible. The handset itself is compact and comfortable to hold, making shooting an effortless task. If you are buying a smart phone on the basis of its camera then look no further, the Nokia 808 PureView is the phone for you!

5 Worst Eurovision Entries of All Time

Featured

If you have been reading the papers and magazines you will be aware that this year Britain is unleashing its secret weapon upon the Eurovision Song Contest, raspy voiced, 80′s rock chick, Bonnie Tyler. Recycling stars from days gone by seems to be Britain’s strategy, last year it was Engelbert Humperdinck, this year Tyler. Yet despite the fact Britain gave birth to most of the biggest pop acts on the planet, we rarely ever do very well at the Eurovision Song Contest.

But we are not the only ones to be handed nil points, check out these entries as we explore the 5 Worst Eurovision Entries of All Time!

Pan – Bana Bana

Imagine the worst sound you can possibly think of, then add in the addition of an orchestra playing a manic array of notes and melodies. The result is confused vision of Turkish composer Timur Selçuk. In 1989 Selcuk wrote the Turkish Eurovision entry Bana Bana for the group Pan. As you can hear from the video above, the song wasn’t exactly the hit of the century and only scored 5 points in total, placing it at 21st of 23, I know what you’re thinking, what was number 23?!

Scooch – Flying The Flag

Here we go, the first of our two abismal British entries, Scooch. Scooch were Britain’s entry in the 2007 Eurovision, with the song (and I use that term loosely) “Flying The Flag”. There literally aren’t enough words in the English dictionary to describe how terrible this song is, but to give you some sort of idea, this song could be used to torture terror suspects. The entry came in at 23 out of 24 entries, listen at your own peril.

Ping Pong – Happy Song

Yeah,…don’t worry about singing in tune, on time, or in key thats not what music’s about, as long as your Happy, that was the message behind Israel’s pop sensation Ping Pong, and their song “Happy Song”. I listened to this song once so I could write this, I felt many emotions; anger, pain, embarrassment, humiliation, none of which resembled happiness though? Surprise surprise the song came 23rd out of 24, before being locked in a safe and dropped into the deepest darkest depths of the ocean where it could hurt and offend no more.

Piero and the Music Stars – Celebrate

“Clap your hands, oh clap your hands, everybody just clap your hands”. Not quite up there with the likes of Zeppelin and Dylan, but catchy none-the-less. Back in 2003 Switzerland became the first country to come last without a single point in a semi-final. I don’t even know where to start with this song. Here we have something so childlike it makes Barney the Dinosaur look like a member of the Wu Tang Clan. There certainly wasn’t anything to “celebrate” here.

Jemini – Cry Baby

In 2003, Britain didn’t even bother selecting a good act, instead we just went to the nearest pub and selected two very bad karaoke singers, slapped some glittery clothes on them and flew them out to Latvia to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. The result was Jemini, with their song “Cry Baby”. Jemini blamed their shoddy performance on their inability to hear the backing track, I would be more inclined to blame their performance on their lack of talent. The song received nil points, obviously.

Harry Styles Isn’t The Only One – More Onstage Blunders

Featured

On the 26th of February, the entertainment world was rocked to its core after news broke that One Direction heart throb, Harry Styles had been assaulted whilst performing in Glasgow, Scotland. As information flooded in it became apparent Styles had been involved in a vicious shoe-throwing incident. Unable able to contain her excitement  14 year old, Jade Anderson hurled her shoe which made a perfect connection with Style’s Netherley-regions.

Ok….ok….perhaps not as earth shattering as the recent meteor shower in Russia, but this story had blown up and gone viral around the world. However, young Harry Styles isn’t the only celebrity to fall victim to and embarrassing onstage surprises.  Here at Your Image on Canvas, we have compiled a list of our favourite onstage blunders and mishaps for your amusement, enjoy!

Jennifer Lawrence Win’s Best Fall

It was the biggest night of her life. Jennifer Lawrence had just been announced as the Winner of the Best Actress for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook”. However, when the words “Oscar” and “Jennifer Lawrence” get mentioned it is for a different reason that she will now be remembered. As Lawrence made her way to the stage, she tripped and fell on the stairs, sending gasps throughout the auditorium and around the world! Hat’s off to her though, as she continued on and graciously accepted her much deserved award.

PINK Gets Catapulted Off The Stage

I’m glad she wasn’t seriously hurt, but when I saw this clip I think I laughed myself to sleep, simply because the elaborate nature of how this accident ends about occurring. For what ever reason, PINK is strapped in some kind of harness, which is then attached to what looks like a very high powered slingshot, before being catapulted from the stage into the crowd? How could you ever think this was going to end in any way other than in tears?

Lady Goes Ga Ga Off Piano

If theres one person that knows how to put on a great show, its Lady Gaga. So here she is pulling of a special move!

Rascal gets Dizzee and Dives Off Stage

Now, Im not a massive pop fan, but I do love Dizzee Rascal. He is one, if not the best, urban acts in the UK and is the epitome of cool. However, what this next video shows is that even Dizzee can lose his swagger now and again!

It Even Happens to Bieber

This next clip is my favourite, they say actions speak a thousand words, so I’m not going to bother explaining this video, it is simply one of the most beautiful things ever captured on camera. Enjoy.

5 Most Embarrassing Brit Award Moments!

Featured

It’s that time of year again when the UK’s popular music industry comes together to celebrate the years big successes and top acts, yes it’s the Brit Awards. As a man of rock and metal, I don’t tend to listen to pop music. I couldn’t tell JLS from One Direction. However, there is a part of The Brit Awards that I do look forward to, and that’s hearing about the embarrassing moments! You know, the total cringe worthy, horribly awkward, bite your tongue and bury your head moments.

So to celebrate this tradition of mine, I have collected 5 of the Most Embarrassing Brit award Moments for you to enjoy with me.

Sam Fox and Mick Fleetwood

Sam Fox and Mick Fleetwood Present Brit Awards

In 1989 the Brit Awards received a makeover, in an attempt to make the event more contemporary and appealing to a younger audience. However, for some unexplained reason, the event’s organisers thought that this should include partnering Page 3 model Samantha Fox, with obscure rock legend Mick Fleetwood? The result? Two and a half hours of the most cringe-worthy live television possibly ever broadcast. Both presenters bumbled their way through their lines, often ignoring the Teleprompter all together. Artists and guests came on stage at completely wrong times. A pre-recorded message from Michael Jackson, the King Of Pop, was completely forgotten about and not shown. All topped off by the fact Fox would “wooop” annoyingly at every awkward silence, for no apparent reason.

Jarvis Moons the King of Pop

Next up is an absolute classic Brit Award blunder. Back in 1996 as a protest to the way in which Michael Jackson apparently “sees himself as some kind of Christ-like figure with the power of healing”, Pulp front-man Jarvis Cocker invaded the King of Pops performance of hit song “Earth Song” and paraded his bottom in front of the audience. Caught live on national television, the incident blew up, splitting the opinions of Cocker’s actions two ways. Some were outraged and described his actions as “appalling”. In the other hand, Oasis front-man  Noel Gallagher praised Cocker saying “Jarvis Cocker is a star” and should that he should be awarded an MBE.

Noel Gallagher’s Richer than You!

Noel Gallagher at Brit Awards 1996

1996 was an eventful year at the Brits, not only was Jarvis Cocker showing MJ the dark side of his….eh…..moon? But Oasis were also adding to the cringe factor, by well….opening their mouths. It appeared that collecting their award was the first time the lads had been away from the bar all night. As the most intelligent of the two brothers, Noel took the mic. What followed was more of a drunken boast, than an acceptance speech. He quickly labelled presenter, INXS singer Michael Hutchence, a “has-been” saying “”Has-beens shouldn’t present awards to gonna-bee’s.” He then proceeded to boast that “He was rich” and that the audience were “poor”. Well done Noel,….well done.

Nobody Messes with Ronnie Wood

In 2000 little known club DJ, Brandon Block took it upon himself to interrupt and insult rock royalty Ronnie Wood. Storming the stage, an incredibly intoxicated Block then confronted Wood’s. Some heated words were exchanged before Woods threw his drink over Block who was then quickly escorted from the stage.  Lesson? Don’t mess with a Rolling Stone!

Adele’s One Finger Salute to ITV

Finally we have our most recent embarrassing moment, which was granted to us at last years 2012 Brit Awards. In what was probably one of the lousiest moves in live television broadcasting, ITV decided to cut the multiple award winning artist as she accepted her most prestigious Best Album award. Presenter James Corden, awkwardly approached Adele after she had only spoken a handful of words and proceeded to announce that he was having to cut her off at the start of her speech. Clearly embarrassed and unimpressed the singer retorted, “goodbye and I’ll see you next time round” before giving a one fingered salute to the “television suits”. Well done Adele, ITV, hang your head in shame.

Last Minute Valentine’s Day Gift Idea’s

Featured

If your anything like me, then you will be currently scouring the internet for late minute Valentine’s Day gift ideas. I’m not big into the whole day myself, but I like to keep my partner happy and its nice to show that the thought was there. However, coming up with something different each year is now getting rather hard.

So to help you buy the perfect gift for that someone special I have compiled a list of my 5 Top Valentine’s Day Gift ideas.

Romantic Weekend Break

Paris at Night

Why not take your partner on a romantic weekend trip away to the country or sea side, or if you have a larger budget a long weekend to Paris? There are many companies in the UK who run exclusive Valentines breaks and these often benefit from reduced prices and added extras.

Customised Jewellery

Everybody loves a bit of bling in their life. Why not get your partner a customised piece of jewellery, such as an engraved necklace, or bracelet? This is a wonderful way to show that you put some thought into your gift and that the one you are giving it to means a lot to you.

Personalised Canvas Print

Canvas Prints

Ok we may be slightly bias here, but a personalised canvas prints make a wonderful valentines gifts. You can either choose to have one treasured photo transformed into wonderful canvas wall art, or select a few different photos and make a collage of your time together. Canvas prints can be completely customised in order to create a piece of wall art that suits your style and home, why not give it ago today and make your first canvas?

Find Dining Experience

Here’s another option for those looking to really surprise their partners. The UK has many fine dining restaurants, some of which are world famous for their unique and innovative take on the world of gastronomy. What’s more if you go for lunch, most fine dining restaurants have a separate 3 course lunch menu which will offer you a range of mouth-watering dishes but at a set price.

Romantic Photo Shoot

Funny Couple Photo Shoot

Finally is an idea that I actually heard on the radio last year, and that is to take your partner on a professional photo shoot. Unfortunately for the man featured on the radio, his partner dumped him the week before Valentine’s Day, so he in revenge took his best mate to the photo shoot who dressed up like the ex-girlfriend! That said, a photo shoot can be a brilliant way to not only surprise your partner, but also bring you close together in an activity that is fun and romantic. You can choose to have formal photos taken, however I think the best results are the silly shots that display your personalities.

What ever you decide to get, we, at Your Image On Canvas, hope that you all have a wonderful day!!

Top 5 Best Christmas Movies of All Time

Featured

I love Christmas. I love the run up, the gradual increase in excitement each day. I love when the Christmas songs start playing in the shops and on the radio and I especially love when all my favourite Christmas movies are shown on the tele. Having grown up with a film-buff for a father, and a professional actor as a brother, movies are a big part of my life. With Christmas just around the corner, I thought this the perfect time to combine my two loves and write my own, personal Top 5 Best Christmas Movies of All Time post.

So please join me now, as I share part of what makes Christmas so special for me.

Home Alone 1+2

Ok, so I’m kind of cheating here by combining two films into one of my five, but for me no Christmas is complete without watching both Home Alone films. Also before you start, yes I said both, I am aware there are other Home Alone films, but in my mind these do not exist, they are abominations that should have never seen the light of day, much like Jurassic Park III.

home alone Home Alone is without a doubt one of the most “Christmasy” films in existence. From the second John Williams magical score begins with those iconic jingle bells, a warm wave of child-like excitement and joy overcomes me.  I know both these films inside and out, I must have seen them both over 40 times in my lifespan, yet they never lose their appeal. The casting is genius, the plot is simple yet engaging and the musical score is sublime. I will never tire of watching young Kevin subjecting his blundering foes to a barrage of booby traps, most of which would be better suited in a medieval torture chamber. Yet if you strip away the, at times sadistic, slap stick moments at the core of both films is the heart-warming message that Christmas without Family isn’t worth having at all.

For me, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without hearing those iconic words…”I Made My Family Disappear?!”

It’s a Wonderful Life

“every time a bell rings, an Angel gets its wings”

Its a Wonderful LifeAs a child I used to hate when my Dad would stick on “It’s a Wonderful Life”. It was old, filmed in black and white, the cheesy American accents annoyed me and there wasn’t enough paint-cans-to-the-face moments; I just wasn’t interested. However, the older I got the more I started to connect with this film and the more I saw it for what it is, not only as a great Christmas film, but one of cinemas all time classics.

Following George Bailey along his emotional journey is a roller-coaster ride that everyone should take at least once in their life. At times, the message of Christmas is often lost in the glitz and hype of today’s highly competitive consumer market, and what It’s a Wonderful Life manages to do is make you reflect on what’s truly important at this time of year. For this reason alone, it stands as one of the best Christmas films of all time.

Edward Scissorhands

Edward ScissorhandsMy next entry is not only one of my favourite Christmas films, but is also one of my overall favourite films of all time. Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands” is a masterpiece. I could talk endlessly about the casting, the story, the direction and photography but for me there is one element that truly defines Scissorhands and that is Danny Elfman’s phenomenal score.

Listening to the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack is like driving a knife into your heart. Never has a piece of music affected me so deeply. Elfman has perfectly captured all the innocence, compassion and heartache that Edward represents and in doing so lifts the film to all new levels. It’s no wonder that so many Christmas advertisement campaigns have opted to use the Scissorhands soundtrack for their adverts; when you here that haunting harp start to play all you think of is Christmas.

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation

National Lampoons Chrstmas VacationOk I got a bit deep with the last two entries so let’s pick things up again with one of Christmases best comedies, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. From the moment the film begins to the word “The End” hit the screen, you will laugh harder and more often than you ever have before.  There are just too many “best moments” in this film; the oversized Christmas tree, the house lights, the sledging, the squirrel, the dog and all the relatives. Christmas Vacation is a master-class in comedy; it contains all forms of comedy and beautifully blends them to create a film that will have you laughing so uncontrollably hard, that you will probably crack a rib or two.

Scrooged

What would Christmas be without Charles Dickens’ classic, The Christmas Carol?

ScroogedThere are so many great versions of this story on offer; my favourites include “The Muppets Christmas Carol” and the recent Jim Carrey CGI version. However there is one adaptation that truly stands out for me and that is “Scrooged”. In Scrooged the utterly brilliant Bill Murray plays Frank Cross who excellently portrays the role of “Scrooge”. It’s the classic Dickens story yet it is so much more and there really is only one reason for this and that’s the character that Bill Murray brings to life. Bill Murray is one of the greatest comedy actors to ever have existed and Scrooged was filmed during the prime of his career. If you want that classic story but with more edge and a lot more laughs, then Scrooged is the version you should watch.

Tell Us Yours?

These were my all-time favourite Christmas Movies, but what are yours? Are they the same? Or is there another that gets you into the spirit of Christmas? Leave your top 5 in the comments below, I’d love to see them.

Top Camera and Photo Apps – Christmas Special!

Featured

With only 12 days until Christmas Eve the atmosphere here at Your Image On Canvas HQ  has become very festive indeed. The workshop is alive with the sound of Christmas music, the office tree is up and everyone is in high spirits. It is for this reason that I am bringing you a very special Christmas edition of our “Top Camera and Photo Apps” blog series.

I have browsed the apps store looking for “Christmasy” photo apps, and to be honest there wasn’t many that caught my eye. I did however find a Photo-Frame app that I quite like, and could provide an easier alternative to sending Christmas cards. Why not surprise your friends and family this year by sending a personalised Christmas photo message instead?

The app in question is called “Christmas Pho.to Frames” by the developer Vicman LLC. This is a very simple app to use and is a great way of transforming your photo’s into a wonderful Christmas message to send your nearest and dearest.

Christmas Pho.to Frames

On opening the app you will reach the main menu screen, which clearly displays all the framing options available to you.

Christmas Pho.to Frames Menu

From here, creating your very own personalised Christmas Photos is incredibly easy. First select the frame or scene you wish to use, once selected you will be prompted to crop your photo, this is easily done by dragging the corners of the cropping square around the subject of your photo. Once you are happy with the cropped photo, press done and the app will get to work creating your Christmas Photo.

Some of the frames and scenes are really fun and for a free app, the quality is rather surprising. Here are a few of my favourites:

Sketch Santa

Christmas Pho.to Frames Sketch Santa

I really liked this sketch effect, sometimes these so-called “pencil sketch” effects are rather disappointing, but this one is very convincing.

New Year Santa

Christmas Pho.to Frames Santa

This is another really good frame that will transform you into old Saint Nick himself, however, the message underneath says “Happy New Year” ? which is slightly odd considering Santa is usually taking a well deserved break over new year.

Naughty List

Christmas Pho.to Frames App NaughtyList

I really liked this frame. Use the photos of those you think should be on Santa’s naughty list and send them a message reminding them to be good!

Bauble Reflection

Christmas Pho.to Frames Bauble

This ones really great, amaze your friends and family by appearing the reflection of this very festive Christmas Bauble!

Icy Window

Christmas Pho.to Frames Icy

Just looking at this one makes me shiver. Another great effect and the blend between photo and frame is seamless resulting in a high quality image.

Christmas Scene

Christmas Pho.to Frames Christmas Scene

Another really nice photo frame effect, this time placing your photo into the picture frame in this toasty little Christmas scene, just looking at it gets us excited!

Review

So I started this post looking for a great Christmas Photo app and to begin with was sadly disappointed by the lack of options. However, I do think I have found a great wee app. It does exactly what it says on the tin, nothing more, nothing less and its wonderfully simple to use. I have sent a few Christmas texts out using the photos created with this app and I have had a lot of people asking which app I used. In my opinion that is a good indication that this is a winner, ok it may not have massive amounts of functionality but, for a free app your only going to use once a year, I think this is a fantastic app.

Score

I scored Christmas Pho-to Frames 7/10, nothing innovative or original here, but it does a good job of what it sets out to do.

Jewellery

A man can never go wrong if he gets his lady a beautiful piece of jewellery. Problem is, there is so much of it out there that it makes choosing the right piece a very traumatic experience. Trust me I’ve walked into jewellery stores with a clear idea of the type of necklace I wanted to get and hours later have left the store empty handed with a mind overloaded with brand names, styles, types of metal and stones and prices. So to help you all out I will simply list 3 brands that are guaranteed to put a smile on your loved ones face.

Tiffany

If you buy anything by these three brands you will be in the good books for a very long time. Some tips when buying jewellery are;  look at what she wears on a daily basis, if she wears a lot of silver guess what? she likes silver over gold so don’t buy gold. Look at her current jewellery look at styles of earrings act, are they large, do the hang, are they small more studded? And in the words of Ron Burgundy, “Stay Classy” stay clear of novelty or tacky pieces, these will not get worn and you will have wasted lots of money.

Kindle Fire HD

Kindle Fire HD

Next up is another tablet device, this time from the creative people at Amazon. For years now Amazon have lead the way in the E-Book market with their Kindle E-Book Readers, now they have stepped up to the tablet market with the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire HD looks like your average tablet device, but boy does she pack a lot of functionality. A 1280×800 HD resolution display complete with polarising filter and anti-glare technology to ensure vibrant colours and clear display even in the most awkward of light settings. Exclusive Dolby audio with dual-driver stereo speakers that produce a sound that is immersive.

The Kindle Fire HD has been designed with films, tv shows, music and books at the forefront of their vision. The 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor produces a fluent and fast performance rivalling anything we have ever seen on a tablet device. It is also the first tablet device with dual antenna, dual-band Wi-Fi allowing for ultra fast downloads and HD streaming.

You can do a lot with the Kindle Fire HD, and here is the best bit, it will only cost you £159.00! making it one of the cheapest tablet devices around.

Perfume

Perfume, another grey area for man. I will hold my hands up and admit that when it comes to perfume shopping I am just as lost as any other man. Each bottle looks appealing, but when I squirt some of this expensive liquid into the air I immediately react in the same as every other scared and awkward bloke around me; a shrug followed by “I duno, smells ok to me”.

I am usually at this point forced into a sort of Spanish Inquisition by the shop assistant. Does she like spice? sweet? elegant? everyday? citrus? warm?………. these questions mean nothing to me, and only further complicate the whole event. So to make it easier for my fellow man, I have compiled another list of 3 of this years top selling perfumes.

Sunglasses

According to a number of online polls and surveys, one of the most wanted womens gifts this Christmas are designer sunglasses. When it comes to sunglasses I like to think I am quite the expert as I do own and wear many pairs, which in Scotland is not very necessary. Choosing the right pair of sunglasses is really down to the shape of the individuals face. Some people can get away with wearing large framed glasses, whilst others are better suited to thinner more petite styles. The thicker framed, larger lens type glasses are very much the “in-thing” at the moment. There are hundreds of designer brands, but when it comes to womens sunglasses, for me, there are two main contenders.

So to get the creative juices flowing we have come up with a list of Iconic Album Covers from our Dad’s era that we believe would make wonderful pieces of Canvas Wall Art, and the perfect Fathers Day Gift!

Abbey Road

The Beatles Abbey Road Album Cover

First up is an album cover so famous it has become a world famous tourist attraction, The Beatles “Abbey Road”. This iconic album cover was shot outside the EMI studios on Abbey Road, where the name for the album was taken. The photograph was taken by Iain Macmillan, who was only given 10 minutes to take the shot. He took the photo perched on a step ladder whilst a police officer held up the busy london traffic. The final image shows the four members of The Beatles crossing the zebra crossing located on Abbey Road, if you look closely and you will see that Paul McCartney is barefoot. This was the first time The Beatles had released an album thats cover did not display the bands name or album title. This simple, but highly effective photograph has grown to become one of the most famous and recognisable images in the world. So much so that everyday Beatles fans flock to Abbey Road to re-create this iconic shot. When the album was released, on the 26th of September 1969, it entered the UK charts at No.1 and stayed there for 17 of its 81 weeks within the charts. Similarly it spent 11 weeks at NO.1 in the US during its 83 weeks within the US charts. The album gave way to such classics as “Here Comes the Sun”, “Come Together” and “Something”.

Aladdin Sane

David Bowie Aladdin Sane Album Cover

Although “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” was David Bowies breakthrough album, it was follow up album “Aladdin Sane” that featured his most iconic album cover. The album title is a pun on “A Lad Insane” and “Aladdin Sane” was essentially a development of the Ziggy Stardust character. Many critics argue that the album contains some of bowies best material, whilst others responded that it was somewhat unsatisfying. The album produced two of Bowies greatest hits, “The Jean Genie” and “Drive-in Saturday”. However it is the albums cover that stood out and ultimately became iconic. The cover shows Bowie himself topless, embracing his rockstar status, a single red lightning bolt cuts across the father of glam rocks face. The lightening bolt was meant to symbolise the duality of mind, however Bowie would later tell friends how the “Lad Insane” of the title, was inspired by his brother Terry, who was diagnosed as a schizophrenic. The image was a head of its time and caused a lot of shock and curiosity when it was first unveiled. The image has remained as strong today as it was back then.

The Velvet Underground & Nico

The Velvet Underground and Nico Album Cover

The velvet Underground were an American Rock band formed in New York, although at the time they never hit large scale commercial success, they went on to become cited as one of the most influential rock groups ever. The band were famously managed by Andy Warhol and were the house band at his studio, The Factory. During the bands time it featured a number of high profile members such as Lou reed and John Cale who both went on to enjoy solo success. The album in question, The Velvet Underground and Nico, was the bands debut and featured a German singer named Nico. Nico joined the band on three of the albums tracks due to the insistence of manager Warhol. The album was released in in March 1967, and featured classic tracks such as “I’m Waiting for the Man”, “Run Run Run”, “Venus in Furs” and “Heroin”, as well as Warhol’s own favourite song “All Tomorrow’s Parties”. The album benefited from cover art by non other than Warhol himself. The original record featured Warhol’s yellow banana print with “Peel Slowly and See” written at the top, if peeled back, the yellow banana sticker would reveal a pink unpeeled banana underneath. The image has since become one of the most recognisable images in Rock music and the album one of the most recognisable in popular culture.

The Dark side of the Moon

Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon Album Cover

The Dark Side of the Moon was the 8th album from  British progressive rock group, Pink Floyd. The album was recorded at Abbey road Studios in London and featured some of the most advanced recording techniques at that time. It explored themes of conflict, greed, the passage of time and mental illness. Each side of the album was one continuous piece of music, with each track exploring different stages of human life. The albums cover was designed by Hipgnosis and George Hardie. Hipgnosis had worked with the band previously on there other albums. The concept behind the design represented three elements, the band’s stage lighting, the albums lyrics, and the request for a “simple and bold” design. The prism and light design featured on the albums cover has become one of the most iconic images of the 21st century. When released in March 1973, The Dark Side of the Moon topped the US charts fro 1 week, before remaining in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988, making it the longest running running album in history. The album is estimated to have sold over 50 million copies worldwide and is one of the most successful album soy all time.

Led Zeppelin 1

Led Zeppelin 1 Album Cover

Finally we have one of the greatest albums of all time, my personal and biased opinion! On the 12th of January 1969 the world was introduced to one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Led Zeppelin. Their self titled debut introduced their groundbreaking new sound, incorporating rhythm and blues with a more hard hitting form of rock. The album hit hard with tracks such as “Communication Breakdown”, “Good Times Bad Times” and the epic “Dazed and Confused”. Led Zeppelin 1 was produced by guitarist Jimmy Page, who claims it only took 36 hours to record the entire album. The albums cover reflects the origin of the bands name. When Page, Jeff Beck,The Who’s Keith Moon and John Entwistle were first contemplating the idea of forming a group, Moon joked, “It would probably go over like a lead balloon”, to which Entwistle replied, “…a lead zeppelin!” The cover is a photograph of the Hindenburg disaster, the only text is the words “Led Zeppelin” in the top left corner. On initial release the album received negative reviews, but was very successful commercially. The album is now regarded by critics as a masterpiece and remains one of the greatest albums of all time.

The following list is a top 5 list of our fathers favourite movie posters, all of which would make fantastic Canvas Prints this fathers day! We hope you enjoy, and please do tell us what your fathers favourite movies are too in the comments section below!

Jaws

Original Jaws Movie Poster

Dun Dun……..Dun Dun………Yes our first classic film as voted by our fathers, is Steven Spielberg’s classic Horror Blockbuster, Jaws. Jaws was released in 1975 and stars Roy Sheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. It tells the story of a quiet costal town, Amity island, that during the height of summer is thrown into panic and devastation as a large man eating shark terrorises and attacks. Jaws was filmed largely on location, but was plagued by misfortune, mostly due to the failure of the mechanical shark. After many attempts to get the shark to work, Spielberg decided to focus the sharks presence through suggestion. This was achieved through the musical score that John Williams created for the movie. The result remains to this day as one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable scores in film history. When Jaws was released in 1975 it made $7 million in its first weekend, recouping its production costs in 2 weeks of opening and fast became the highest grossing film of its time.

The Godfather

Original Godfather Poster

Before Jaws was released the highest grossing film of all time was The Godfather. The Godfather is an adaptation of the novel of the same title written by Mario Puzo, and was directed by Francis Ford Copolla. Released in 1972, The Godfather follows the rise of Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino, as he grows from family outsider to ruthless and powerful Mafia Boss. The story also chronicles the experiences of the Corleone family, headed by Don Vito, played by Marlon Brando. On its release in 1972, The Godfather fast became the highest grossing film of all time. It went on to win three Academy Awards for, Best Picture, Best Actor (Brando) and Best Adapted Screenplay.  It is highly regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, and went on to spawn two sequels, which were equally as successful.

Ben Hur

Original Ben Hur Poster

Ben Hur is my fathers personal favourite film of all time. Released in 1959 and directed by William Wyler, Ben Hur went on to win 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, a record not beaten until the release of Titanic in 1997. The story follows the adventures of Juddah Ben Hur, played by Charlton Heston, one time Jewish prince and merchant in Jerusalem, who ends up being made an example of at the hands of one time friend and commanding officer of the Roman Legions, Messala. We follow Ben Hur as he is condemned to the life of a roman gallery slave and watch how good fortune allows him to return to Jerusalem to seek redemption. Running parallel to the story of Ben Hur is the story of Jesus. The two stories reflect similar themes of betrayal, conviction and redemption. In the end Ben Hur is overpowered by the messages taught by Jesus, and instead of revenge turns to support he new religion with money that he has inherited. Ben Hur is an all time classic, and has stood the test of time as one of the greatest films ever made.

Snow White

Original Disney Snow White Poster

“HI HOOOO!!”….Yes our fathers next favourite film surprised us too, but to be honest it is an absolute classic. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first ever cel-animated feature length motion film. Produced by Walt Disney, the story was an adaptation if the classic German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The story follows Snow White, a beautiful princess, who is the subject of much jealousy for her wicked stepmother, the Queen. In the film, the queen famously asks her magic mirror “who’s the fairest of them all?”.  However one day, the mirror responds to the Queen “Snow White”. Outraged by this, the Queen orders a huntsman to take Snow White into the forrest and have her killed. The huntsman however, is unable to kill the young and beautiful princess, and instead tells her to run away and never return. Lost and confused, Snow White stumbles upon a small wood cabin, where she meets seven dwarfs. Mean while the Queen, under the assumption that Snow White is dead, asked her magic mirror again “Who’s the fairest of them all?”.  Again the mirror repeats “Snow White”. Furious the Queen uses magic to disguise herself as an old hag, and tricks Snow White into eating a poisonous apple. The woodland animals chase the evil Queen up a cliff where she is struck by lightening and falls to her death. Mean while Snow White falls into a deep death like state. The dwarfs, unable to wake Snow White, place her in a glass coffin and keep watch over her. After sometime a handsome prince discovers Snow White and kisses her still body, which in return breaks the wicked Queens spell.

Spartacus

Original Spartacus Poster

“I’m Spartacus!!”…. Probably one of the most famous scenes in film history, our final quote come from THE fathers day favourite, Spartacus. Spartacus follows the life of Spartacus, a rebellious slave goes from fighting for his life as a gladiator to leading an army of slaves against the roman general Marcus Licinius Crassus. The film was directed by Stanley Kubrick and stars Kirk Douglas as Spartacus and Laurence Olivier as Marcus Licinius Crassus. The film won 4 Academy Awards and has grown in stature since its release. It is regularly featured in many prominent “Top Film….” lists and was one of the highest grossing films of its time.

Do-it-Yourself Photograph Printing Tips

Featured

Most of us have experienced disappointment at our first attempts of photograph printing. If you are planning to pass the frustration point and learn a few tips on how to do-it-yourself then this article is just for you.  There are many tips and tricks that depend specifically on the printer you have, paper, printer ink and such but we will give broad ideas that will help you to get started.

Although laser technology has achieved amazing results on photo printing, inkjet and thermal dye printers are still the first choice to accomplish high quality results.  A general rule when using inkjet photograph printers (i.e. Canon, Kodak, HP, Epson) is that they have been manufactured to work best when using their original ink cartridges and photo paper. If you are looking for photo studio results at home then you have to buy the materials designed for that printer.  Some printer brands such as HP, Canon and Brother have special photo ink cartridges that, coupled with their glossy or matte high quality photo paper, perform perfectly. Now after you’ve got the hang of photograph printing and tried it for some time then you can use third party compatible cartridges or aftermarket ink for less important projects.

Printer Types

Photo Printers

Let’s go back a bit to the type of printer that gives you the best prints.  There are two main types of photo printers, dedicated photo printers and near-dedicated machines.  Photo Printers include thermal dye printers, for example Kodak has a range of portable printers dedicated to printing photographs.  Usually they print photographs in small format 4 x 6 inch or a bit larger, however there are machines that will print panoramic sizes. The other main category of photo printer are the near-dedicated photo printers. These are for hard core photograph printing, aimed more towards amateur and professional photographers.  They fall in to the most expensive inkjet printer category in the market but they live up to their price. These printers typically print 13 by 19 inch or in other words letter and legal size business documents.  By using near-dedicated printers you increase the range of photo paper choices and several fine art papers that you can buy.  The results will be photo lab quality photo prints.

Testing and Previewing

The first important tip to remember is to never test using plain paper.  The results are just not the same, the colours are different and the absorption of the ink will change the final photograph.  Get to know your printer features as well as direct printing options.  Most dedicated photograph printers (and with the integration of touch boards) allow you to fix images before printing.  You can change contrast, brightness and gamma at different levels.  Obviously it is important to use the red-eye reduction feature for better portrait prints.  Direct printing means that you can finally exclude the PC or laptop from the printing equation and instead use your camera’s memory, USB ports and now with WIFI enabled printers you can send iPhone and iPad images via email to your printer or print directly from the device itself!

Before using the direct print feature it is a good idea to preview the photos if your printer allows you do so.  Previewing can be done in the printer screen or you can print an index sheet.  Obviously the printer screen is easier and faster and you’ll save printer ink on the process as well as paper, but index sheet printing is best if you have similar images and are working with shading and light. This allows you to inspect the photos quality and detail before committing to your final print on high quality printing paper.

Photo Editing

With all the photo enhancing software available it is a good idea to edit your photos before printing.  A good tip to keep in mind is to edit copies and not the original photographs.  Any minor tweaks, effects, cropping etc. should be done on a copy in case the final result is not the one you were looking for.  Deleting copies is less painful that losing a priceless image for good.

Use the Right Paper

Another great tip to keep in mind, and that we quickly mentioned earlier, is to use the right photo paper.  We already mentioned that regular paper is not the best option, in order to achieve high quality photo prints it is essential that you use high quality photo paper for it, there is no other trick to it.  Yes it is slightly more expensive, but the end results are superior in their quality, and when it comes to printing your best photo’s you really want the best results.

Last but not least, and sticking to the topic of paper, make sure you change your printer’s settings for the type of paper you are using.  Photo paper is thicker than common paper and if the settings are not changed then you can be the victim of the dreaded paper jam.  Some printers already have sensors that detect automatically the type of paper in use, but you and I know that printers can be temperamental.  In the end it is always the printers fault when things go wrong!

Capturing and Enhancing Wedding Photos for Canvas Prints

Featured

Bride and Groom Leave Church

Running a Canvas Prints company I see a large volume of wedding photography each and everyday. Many wedding photographers even offer the option of printing to canvas themselves, and if you don’t you should! However if you are going to have your wedding photos printed onto canvas you need to ensure that your photographs are up to scratch. When you enlarge any photo, imperfections are made very clear. It is therefore a good idea to take some time before and after capturing your photographs to ensure that they are of a high quality before spending time and money having them printed to canvas.

This post will offer some simple tips to ensure your photos are the best that they can be, so that they make fantastic Canvas Prints.

Capturing Perfect Wedding Photographs

Being a wedding photographer can be an extremely rewarding occupation. Meeting new people, attending lavish and unusual weddings and being paid to do what you love. However, there is a huge responsibility upon your shoulders to produce exceptional work. It is your job to capture each wedding perfectly and make those you capture look their best. Becoming a good wedding photographer takes time and practice, but there is one factor that will always set you apart from others and that is preparation. Never turn up on the day  without any preparation and expect things to go well and for you to produce your best work. Months before the day you should have already met the Couple several times, spent time getting to know them and what they want and expect. Visit the venue, scope out some nice locations, get an idea for the feel and atmosphere of the venue and its surroundings. Closer to the day you should revisit the venue at the times you will be shooting, to get an idea of lighting and ensure nothing has changed since your first visit. On the day arrive early and prepared. This means with all your equipment and back up cameras, a written plan of action for the day including any notes you have taken.

Key Moments of The Day

Obviously this list will differ wedding to wedding, but these are key moments of the day that you should be covering:

  • Bride Getting Read
  • Groom Waiting at Church
  • Bride Arriving at church
  • The ceremony (If Allowed and Appropriate)
  • Leaving the Church
  • Wedding Party and Group Shots
  • Bride and Groom alone (Take Lots and Lots)
  • Bride and Groom Arriving at Reception9
  • The Meal
  • Speeches
  • Cutting of the cake
  • First Dance
  • General Party, Dance Shots
  • Bride and Groom Leaving Venue

Lighting

Lighting is very important when it comes to any photography. Never depend on your cameras flash, the key to perfect wedding photography is to utilise as much natural light as possible. This will make for the most natural and flattering shots. If shooting indoors or in low light use reflectors to direct your flash. You want to avoid lighting your subject from the front as this eliminates shadows which will leave your subject looking flat faced and uninteresting. Learning how to bounce or diffuse your flash will definitely improve your wedding photography skills. Also make use of any unusual or interesting lighting situations such as disco lights, church candles.

Shooting

Wedding Ceremony

Great Wedding Photography is about thinking out the box. Viewing the days events from another angle. Be bold and adventurous, be creative and original. Your clients will thank you for it and will most likely refer you to others if you produce something unique.

You want your photos to look and feel natural. Unfortunately many people when face to face with a camera freeze up or start putting on their best “camera faces”. This hides their true personality and feelings and makes for hideous photographs. to get around this, engage with them. Speak to them and make them laugh. this will distract them from the camera allowing you to capture more natural looking photos.Take lots of burst shots, and I mean a lot, the great thing about the digital age is you can literally take thousands of photos in a session. This will also make it very hard for your subject to keep up any false nature, and will result in the most natural and interesting shots.

Shoot from a distance using your cameras zoom lens to get in close to your subject. Shooting close up can distort your subject and make their face look round, bulging and enlarge certain features, not very flattering. Be a fly on the wall, take photos when people are unaware, catch quite moments and less significant moments. Remember your documenting the entire day, sometimes these shots become your clients favourites.

Editing Your Photos

After the big day it is important to spend some time touching up and editing your photographs especially if you aim to print onto canvas. By spending just a little time on each photo, using a photo editing program such as Photoshop, you will ensure that your photos are ready to be printed at a large scale. Here are some basic photo editing tips to ensure your photos are the best they can be before printing onto canvas.

Colour Correction

Wedding Dance

When you take a photograph the lighting will effect the over all look of your final photo. So if you shot during the day, at dusk, at night, heavy cloud, or under a florescent or incandescent lighting setting then you will find the photos colour will be effected. Before the age of digital photography, photographers used colour filters on their lenses to counter act this effect. Now a days with photo editing software this can be edited and adjusted after the photo has been taken. Make appropriate colour tint adjustments to improve and enhance your image. Aim for the most natural looking result. You can also use contrast and saturation adjustments to bring out certain elements of your photograph. For example by whitening up the area around your subjects eyes and by removing the natural red veins you can really make your subjects eyes stand out. Techniques such as these are perfect for portrait photographs and group shots, and will help improve your photos when printing them to canvas.

Touch Ups

Photo touch ups are heavily used by the media to improve and adjust photos. Techniques such as airbrushing are used to make celebrities appear flawlessly beautiful. As a wedding photographer it is your job to ensure subjects such as the bride and groom look their best. Digital touch-up techniques allow us to remove unwanted elements from our photos such as spots and blemishes and other unwanted imperfections or objects. Use these tools tastefully, they key is to improve your photo, not to go over the top. At the end of the day you still want to present your photography skills, not your editing skills. You can also add additional effects such as blurring and focusing to bring forward and exaggerate certain aspects of your photos.

Enlargement

Finally, depending on the size of canvas that you wish to print to, you may need to look at image interpolation. This is a technique used to digitally enlarge photographs without compromising the quality and clarity of your original photograph. Most contemporary photo editing software will automatically adjust this when you alter the images size and pixel count. It is worth contacting your printing specialist to double check the pixel ratio to the size of canvas you wish to print to. Once this is done you can proceed with creating unique Canvas Wall Art for your clients using their wedding day photographs.

Top 5 Greatest Wimbledon Moments

Featured

British Summer 2012, has been all about Sport, the Euro’s, Wimbledon and the Olympics all crammed into one, albeit wet, Summer. As a Scottish company, here at Your image on Canvas we held our breathe as Andy Murray took on Roger Federer this Sunday. Unfortunately, Federer brought the better game, but as Murray stated “Im getting closer!”. Sport is a very popular subject when it comes to Canvas Prints, everyday we get hundreds of amazing photo’s of amazing sporting moments. To commemorate what has been a great summer of sports and a fantastic Wimbledon, we have compiled a list of the 5 Greatest Wimbledon Moments.

Rain for Henman

Tim Henman in Rain

Before that wonderful automatic roof was installed at Wimbledon, British weather was a factor that often added conflict and controversy to the events proceedings. One player that knows of this all too much is, our own, Tim Henman. Although Henman reached and played in four Semi-Finals, it was his rain-soaked 2001 Semi-Final match against Goran Ivanisevic, that stands out. The match started on the Friday, was stopped due to rain and resumed on the Saturday, before again being stopped due to rain and finished on the Sunday. On the Sunday, the two players were only on court for 20 minutes. Henman recalls the match being very strange, as “Usually, when you lose a big match like that, you have been out there for two, three or four hours, and there has been a build-up of adrenalin, tension and emotion. But there wasn’t after 15 or 20 minutes, and it felt so anti-climactic,”. Ivanisevic went onto win the final and the mens singles, championship trophy.

Sampras’ Last Wimbledon Game

Pete Sampras

No one could have predicted that in 2002, Pete Sampras would be stepping onto the grass at Wimbledon for his very last time. What made this game so astonishing was the fact that Sampras, seven-time Wimbledon Champion was knocked out by George Bastl. George who? Exactly! Bastl was ranked 145 in the world and was given the opportunity to play at Wimbledon after receiving a “Lucky Losers” place for the main draw, after another player withdrew due to injury. The match took place on court two, commonly known as the “Graveyard of Champions”. To make matters worse, Sampras was apparently going through some sort of inner crisis himself. Before the match his wife, Bridgette Wilson, had given him a note of encouragement. Sampras was seen fishing through his bag to read the mote on several occasions throughout the match. After the match Sampras sat in his chair for several minutes. He stated at the time he would be back next year, but never did. Bastl never won a match at Wimbledon again.

“You Cannot be Serious!”

John McEnroe Yelling

During the 80′s World Tennis had found its rockstar, a young, angry but extremely gifted player; John McEnroe. McEnroe was known for his outburst and tantrums, he never shied away from telling the umpires what he thought of them and their decisions. It was in 1981 that McEnroe cemented himself within Wimbledon and World Tennis history. Throughout the opening round match, McEnroe had spat a lot of insults towards the Umpire. It all accumulated when the Umpire called a serve out to which McEnroe erupted with his now iconic words, “You Cannot Be Serious!”. These four words have followed McEnroe ever since, and has provided the world with one of the most entertaining moments in Tennis history.

For a long time it was known as the greatest Tennis match ever played at Wimbledon. Often referred to as The War of 18 -16 or simply The-Tie-Break, the 1980 Wimbledon men’s Final against Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe was simply one of the most intense games in Wimbledon History. Borg was attempting to win his fifth successive Wimbledon title, and charasmatic McEnroe was determined to stop him. The match was epic, both players displaying astonishingly good tennis. By the forth set Borg had seven match points, yet lost the tie-break. Many believed that McEnroe would dominate that fifth set and win his first grass victory. However, despite McEnroe’s consistently strong attempts to break him,  Borg held his game and played through to a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7, 8-6 victory. The match went down in history as one of the finest displays of tennis, and also the most exciting match ever played at Wimbledon. So much so that for years after, when ever it rained at Wimbledon the BBC would replay the footage of that match.

Nadal vs Federer

Federer vs Nada

For many years the Borg – McEnroe match was hailed as the most exciting Wimbledon game of all time. That was until 2008, when Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer met each other, for what has now become, the greatest Wimbledon final ever, and arguably the greatest match in tennis history. For the first half of the match it looked like Nadal would win the final in straight sets. However, Federer hung in, fighting to bring the game to a forth set tie-break. The game was plagued by rain twice which forced the match to be postponed. As the match tore on, the sun began to set, making visibility on court more difficult. Despite these uncontrollable factors, and Federer’s unwillingness to be broke, Nadal was able to muster all his strength and skill in order to bring home a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7 victory. The match saw two of tennis’ giants colliding in a battle for the title. It displayed some of the best tennis the world has seen. Tim Henman recalls the match a “That was the undoubtedly the greatest match I have ever seen”.

How To Use Instagram

Featured

Instagram LogoInstagram, heard of it? Ok, ok of course you have, to not have heard about Instagram would mean you’ve been living under a rock for the last year. However, despite the fact that Instagram has taken the world by storm, there are many who do not know much about this revolutionary App. Here at Your image On Canvas we have been experimenting and getting creative with Instagram and would like to share our tips on How To Use Instagram with you.

Instagram is a new social media platform that relies on its users creativity to bring it to life, by capturing and sharing photographs. Users can edit, enhance and add effects to their photos to make them unique and exciting. They can then tag their photos so that other users can easily find other photos that relate to certain topics. Becoming confident at all these practices can make Instagram an extremely rewarding service.

This article will look at 5 Steps on How To Use Instagram.

Step 1: Register Your Account.

Instagram Registration Screen Shot

The first thing you need to do to start your Instagram journey is to download the App and register an account. Instagram is available on i-Phone and Android devices. Once downloaded you will be prompted to register an account. If you are using Instagram as part of a  business, try and keep your Instagram name the same or similar to that of you Twitter and Facebook accounts. This makes it easier for users to find you when looking for photos or when tagging you in an photo.

Step 2: The Fun Bit – Capturing Wonderful Photos

This is relatively easy and more boils down to your own creativity and eye for a good photo opportunity. Select the blue camera button in the centre of your Instagram Navigation panel. This gives you two options; to either take a photo right then and there, or to import an already saved image from your camera roll. To do this press the double squared button on bottom left corner of the screen to browse your image gallery.

The key here is to be inventive, innovative, creative and unique. Take photos that stand out, catch the eye and provoke emotion or intrigue. Some of the best images on Instagram are those you say to yourself “I would never have thought to do that”.

Step 3: Get Creative – Filters and Boarders

Making a Canvas Print

Once you have captured your perfect photo, its time to get creative! Instagram comes packed with an array of Filters and Boarders so you can edit your photos to give them real character. Add a filter to your photo to instantly change the feel, mood, and atmosphere of any photo. All filters come with a unique border too, so you can add rounded edges to your photos or create the perfect polaroid style.

Through experimentation you will soon discover how certain filters and boarders work with certain types of photos. As you become more confident, you will find yourself instantly selecting certain effects, filters and boarders quickly and efficiently.

Step 4: Be Seen, Using Hashtags

Instagram Hashtags

With your photo looking awesome, its now time to publish it so the world can view and enjoy your photography skills. This is by far the best part of using Instagram, and for any business using it as a marketing tool, a vital step to using Instagram so that it works for your business. The first thing you need to do is add a caption to your photo. This should be kept brief but interesting. Describe your photo, or add more insight regarding the photo’s subject.

The next thing to add is the all important hashtags. Using hashtags in Instagram is very similar to the way that they are used in Twitter. When it comes to tagging Instagram Photo’s you should make sure that you cover all possible variations so that your audience can find your photos. Tag the location, venue, other people, anything that is relevant and included within the photo. This way when people search for certain subjects using the explore function, your photos will be displayed for all to see. This is a great way of increasing your audience, and for businesses, is a great way to engage and interact with your customers on a personal basis. Be clever with photo captions and hashtags and soon you will have a large volume of followers, this is what makes Instagram such an engaging social platform.

Step 5: Go Social

Social Media Logos

A great feature of Instagram is the ease of which you can share your photos through other Social Platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. As you are being prompted for the photo caption you will notice below that you have the option to select which social platforms your photos are displayed through. Select which ever platforms you have an account for before publishing your image. As soon as you press publish your photo will be simultaneously shared through each of these social platforms. The key to any social media platform is to “Be Social”. Follow others, comment on their photos, share their photos, regularly update and publish new photos. By engaging with Instagram as much as you would with say Facebook you will benefit from more followers and therefore get the most from your Instagram experience.

Curiosity, We have Touchdown – 5 Amazing Space Photos

Featured

Hubble Telescope Photo of Mars

Today NASA’s Curiosity rover safely landed on the surface of Mars, within the Gale crater. Curiositiy’s main objective is to establish whether or not Mars has ever had the conditions to support life. The project, which has cost $2.5bn, is the largest and most sophisticated rover mission on Mars, and a hugely exciting project at NASA.

To celebrate Curiosity’s safe landing and our exploration of outer space, we have created a top 5 list of our favourite space photos! These photo’s would make wonderful Canvas Prints, so if you would like any of them for your home, please do get in contact with us.

1. Cosmic Dust Clouds

This heavenly image was captured in May 2009. It is a close up image of NGC 7023, or more commonly known, the Iris Nebula. It shows vast clouds of cosmic dust.

2. Butterfly Nebula

Butterfy Nebula cAPTURED BY Hubble Telescope

This explosive photo was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. It shows the death throes of a star, estimated to be 5 times the size of our sun. The image captures two gargantuan lobes of hot gas and debris, this explosion resulted in creating one of the hottest places in the galaxy, just under 20,000 degrees Celsius!

3. Pillars of Creation

Hubble Telescope Photo of the Pillars of Creation

The above photo is one of the most famous photographs ever taken by the hUBBLE telescope. entitled “The Pillars of Creation”, the photo captures massive interstellar clouds. What the photo shows is actually the creation of new stars in this “young” nebula.

4. The Pale Blue Dot

Picture of Earth from Voyager 1 Spacecraft

Ok so not the most visually exciting photo of the five, but this is one of the most important photos ever taken. The photo was captured by the 1990 Voyager 1 spacecraft. The reason it is so important, is that the tiny Pale Blue Dot half way down the brown streak is actually our home planet Earth. The photo was taken at a record distance of 3.7 billion miles, at the request of astronomer Carl Sagan. Sagan said that “all of human history has happened on that tiny pixel, which is our only home.”

5. Eagle Nebula

Hubble Photo of the Eagle Nebula

This is by far our favourite of the five photos. It was released by NASA to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope. The image shows a phenomenal tower of cold gas and dust that rises from the stellar nursery, the Eagle Nebula. The outstanding tower of gas that rises from the Eagle Nebula is 9.5 light years high, about 57 trillion miles high. A distance equal to that of our sun to the next nearest star!

3 Great Mobile Camera Apps and How to Use Them

Featured

10 years ago I was happy that my Nokia 3210 allowed me to play Snake. 10 years on, and I can now capture photos in glorious HD, create short animated films and share it all with the world at the touch of a button! Mobile devices have come leaps and bounds in the past couple of years, and the mobile App industry is a big bucks business.

We recently launched our Instagram service that allows you to transform your Instagram photos into wonderful high quality Canvas Prints. We love technology and Apps that make it easy for everyday people to get creative and enjoy photography. We have created a guide of 3 of the best Camera Apps, and how to use them.

All these Apps are free so download them, they are really fun!

Photo Art – Color Effects

Photo Art – Color Effects, by Fun Factory, is a great App that allows you to edit your photos in a very fun and creative fashion. On installing the App, you will reach a menu, there are two options here, either “choose a picture from gallery”, or “take a photo with camera”.

Once you have your photo, this is when the fun begins. Photo Art – Color Effects main feature is the ability to manipulate the colour elements of your photo. the most popular effect is to take a black and white photo, and select certain parts of the photo to have colour. This is great for highlighting the colour of someones eyes. We have used this effect with this photo of a butterfly, and we think it looks really cool, it really makes the butterfly stand out, giving the photo a new dimension.

Photo Art Butterfly Photo

There is a great selection of effects that can be added as well as just black and white. For a free App the selection really is fantastic. Top Effects include:

  • Tints
  • Grayscale
  • Sepia
  • Negative
  • Thermal
  • Heatmap
  • Mosaic

These are our favourites so far, but there are 32 in total all of which can be applied and edited as above. Using the App is incredibly easy, simply select your effect, and use your finger to edit the parts of the image you wish to stand out. Each effect can be edited too, offering even more creativity and personalisation of your photos. You can also select different brush types, allowing you to choose a smaller brush for more intricate parts, or soy brushes to create a soft edge around your subjects.

The best part of all is the ability to take the photo you have created and upload it in Instagram, where you can further customise the photo before sharing it with the world!

InstaPicFrame

InstaPicFrame, from Tiny piece Co. Ltd, has been growing in popularity as Instagram continues to become one of the most successful Apps on the market. This is again a very simple App, that offers a very hands on, yet still easy user experience. InstaPicFrame allows you to make collages of your best instagram Photo’s, so you can have several images within one Instagram.

InstaPicFrame butterfly Photo

Once installed you will reach the main menu. This gives you three options, Pro Mode, Edit mode and Camera Mode.

Pro Mode gives you full control of your collage. First select a template, there are lots to choose from and range from two to five photo frame templates. Once you have selected a template you can adult the size of the collage, this is achieved using an aspect ratio. You can also select a different style of frame, change the colour or apply a pattern to further customise your collage. The final option allows you to Add a border, you can also round the edges to give your collage that Polaroid look.

Once you have customised everything you would like you can then add your photos. This is done by simply touching the spaces within you template. You can then access your gallery and select the various photos you would like to include. Once they are in their boxes, you can rotate and zoom in on the photos to create a unique collage of your photos.

Edit Mode achieves the same results, but instead of manually creating each element of your collage, InstaPicFrame will automatically create on at random.

Camera Mode allows you to create collages straight from your camera. So you can take several images in quick succession and they will be instantly placed within a collage template.

Again this App works wonderfully along side Instagram, so you can create and share your wonderful collages at the touch of a button.

Clay Frames – Lite

Ok, I’ve left the best for last. I have wanted a camera that can do this since I was 7, and now my phone has been transformed into my dream. Clay Frames, by Mr Lightbox, allows you to create stop motion animated films using your phones camera. Now everyone can have a stab at creating the next Wallace and Gromit!

I really, REALLY love this App. It is deeply addictive. Having just downloaded it, I have not had time to go out and buy some plasticine yet, but the satisfaction I have had just making my coffee mug move across my desk has been immense.

The App doesn’t look the best, it is very basic and rather 90′s in its design. But that doesn’t matter at all, because this App delivers the goods and some! Making a film is blissfully easy. Simply go to New, and give your film a name, mine was “Coffee Mug Test”, a working title. Then go to Photo and you will see your cameras view finder. From here on its just a matter of tapping the screen every time you wish to take a shot. Try and only make small movements to your subject, as small movements over many shoots will result in a smoother film.

Clay Frames Lite is a free version of the App and therefore comes with limited features. However, as a massive fan of this App, I bought the full version, priced at £1.50 and I must say for such a low price this App is worth every penny. The full version allows you to record in full 1080p HD, which is fantastic, it also allows you to directly share your videos to your social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

For me this App is a dream come true, I have already spent most of today making various items on my desk move and disappear. Ok so Spielberg will never get in touch to adapt my office stationary films, but with some creativity, imagination and patience this App can be used to make outstanding stop motion films without breaking your bank balance.

5 Great Moments from the 2012 Olympics in Photos

Featured

Well its all over, but what an Olympics it was. Britain managed to come 3rd in the overall standings, with a total of 65 medals won, 29 golds, 17 silver and 19 bronze. A huge well done to all the athletes that took part, your country is truly proud of you all. To bring our coverage of this years summer sporting events we have compiled a list of our top 5 greatest moments from the London 2012 Olympics.

There were so many great moments, and so many fantastic photos capturing them all. We have since been inundated with Olympic photos to be transformed into wonderful Canvas Prints. Perhaps you have some great photos? we would love to see them, so please share them with us on Facebook and Twitter.

Opening Ceremony

This is how it all began. The worlds eyes were transfixed, eager to see what Britain had up its sleeve for the Olympics Opening ceremony. Created and directed by Oscar Winning Director Danny Boyle, the result was a truly British extravaganza. A celebration of everything British from industrial growth to medical innovations, classic literary works to modern day classics, film and music, and of course that unique British sense of humour. Highlights included the Queen’s sketch with James bond, Daniel Craig, as she parachuted into the stadium from a helicopter, Mr Bean, Rowan Atkinson, playing Chariots of fire with the London Symphony Orchestra and the breath taking fireworks display.

Usain Bolt’s 3 Back-To-Back Golds

There were many names that stood out at the 2012 Olympics, Sir Chris Hoy, Mo Farah, Andy Murray, but there was one that stood above the rest and that was Usain Bolt. What a games it was for Bolt, winning 3 Gold Medals and setting 2 new record times for the 100 meters and contributing to the Jamaican Relay teams record time. The stadium would erupt into frenzy every time Bolt set food on the track. His charisma and loveable personality wonderfully captured the spirit of the games. He not only gave us some of the finest moments of the games, but also of sporting history!

Andy Murray Wins at Wimbledon

Another of the greatest moments of the games was seeing Andy Murray take home the Gold at the mens Tennis. Only a couple of weeks after his defeat to Roger Federer at Wimbledon 2012, Murray managed to show the world what he’s made of, beating Federer on centre court at Wimbledon. It was a great match, with Murray playing strong throughout, leading to a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Mo Farah Becomes Magnificent Seventh

One moment that truly captured the hearts of the British people was when Mo Farah won the gold for both the 5,000m and 10,000m long distance runs. Mo moved to Britain at the age of 8 as a refugee from Somalia. By winning both races, Mo became the seventh man in the history of the games to win gold for both events. Could Mo Farah become the 2nd man in history to retain those titles at the Rio 2016 Olympics?

Closing Ceremony

Finally it comes as no surprise that the closing ceremony has clenched this final spot, and what a night it was. For me personally the closing ceremony captured what Britain is most famous for, and that is good music. With music (Recordings) and live performances by The Beatles, David Bowie, The Who, Queen, Madness, George Michael, Muse, The Spice Girls and Take That. It was a fantastic evening and perfectly tied up what was a summer of outstanding sporting achievement.

They had the talent, and they could deliver it, they captured the hearts and excitement of their fans and constantly produced great music. These are the people that every year our X-Factor hopefuls dream of becoming. So with out further a do here is the Your Image On Canvas – The X-Factor – 5 Musical Icons Who Actually Had It, countdown.

James Brown

James Brown

He was the originator of funk, his career spanned 61 years, he won many awards and was inducted into many prestiges Halls of Fame, he is the godfather of soul, James Brown. James was born on the 3rd of may 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina. Brown began performing at the age of 12, forming his first vocal group, the Cremona Trio in 1945. He was inspired to become a performer after seeing  Louis Jordan, a popular jazz and R&B performer, play”Caldonia” in a short film.

His first commercial breakthrough came with the release of the album “Live at The Apollo”. Brown self financed the concert at the Apollo and arranged for the gig to be recorded live. Despite being advised not to go through with his plan, due to the fact that “nobody buys live albums”, Brown stuck to his guns. The Album was a huge success, reaching No. 2 in the pop chart, and selling a million copies, staying in the charts for 14 months. Following the success of “Live at the Apollo” Browns stature within popular music exploded, he released many successful albums, starred and wrote the music for a lot of popular films, performed all round the world and was highly decorated and recognised with many sought after awards and accolades. James Brown died on Christmas day 2006 from congestive heart failure as a result of complications from pneumonia. His legacy as the grandfather of funk and soul is still as strong today as ever, he truly was one of the worlds greatest performers.

Elvis Presley

Elvis

When it comes to having the X-Factor it would be a crime not to mention the King of Rock n Roll himself, Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley was born on the 8th of January, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Elvis was infatuated with music from a very early age. He learned to play the guitar, and would take it to school where he would play during lunch break. He was often teased for being odd, a mummy’s boy and was told he had no talent for singing. In 1954 he was picked up by, now legendary, Sun Records. In 1955 that contract was sold to RCA Victor and within the next year Elvis had become an international mega star.

Elvis sold over one billion records, of his American sales he earned Gold, Platinum an Multi-Platinum Awards, he was nominated for 14 Grammy Awards, of which he won 3. He starred in 33 successful Hollywood movies, yet despite his fame and stature he still enrolled in the U.S Army during World War Two.

Elvis died in his Memphis home, Graceland, on the 16th of August 1977. He is still to this day regarded as the King of Rock n Roll, he has become an Icon of popular music and his music is still celebrated and loved around the world.

Madonna

Madonna

Ok so its about time we included a female in our countdown, and after the King theres no one more fitting than the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna.  Madonna was born on the 16th of August 1958 in Bay cit, Michigan. Her mother died at an early age, but despite such tragedy early on in life Madonna went onto become a straight A student, and member of her high school cheerleading squad. On leaving school she was granted a scholarship at the University of Michigan where she studied dance. She dropped out of University in 1978 and moved to New York to pursue a career in dance.

She formed a band with a musician that she was romantically involved with, their music caught the interest of record producer Mark Kamins who arranged for a meeting between Madonna and founder of Sire Records, Seymour Stein.  Madonna signed a singles deal with Sire. Her debut single, “Everybody”, was released on the 24th of April, 1982, and became a huge dance hit. Following the success of “Everybody”, Madonna released her first debut album, “Madonna”. The album was a massive success, reaching number 8 on the US Billboard 200. The album gave pith to songs such as “Holiday”, “Borderline” and “Lucky Star”.

Over a career that has spanned 33 years, Madonna has carved her name well and truly into the walls of popular music and culture. She has sold millions of records worldwide, won many recognised awards, starred in film, been an active charity worker and contributor and has influenced popular culture and fashion throughout her career. There has never been a female artist that has managed to rival Madonnas success, which is why she truly has the X-Factor.

Freddy Mercury

Freddy Mercury

So far all of our artists have built successful careers as solo artists. He lead one of the worlds most successful rock bands, he captured the hearts of millions, his music was inspirational and his performances even more so, of course were talking about Freddy Mercury. Freddy was born, Farrokh Bulsara, on the 5th of September 1946, in the British protectorate of Zanzibar, East Africa. Mercury spent most of his childhood in India, he started learning piano at the age of seven. He went to a British all boys school called St Peters in Panchgani, Bombay (now Mumbai). At the age of 17, due to the Zanzibar Revolution, Freddy and his family fled to the UK.

It was in Britain in 1971 that he formed the band, known as Queen. In 1973 Queen released their debut album, “Queen”. the album was well received by critics, however is was their follow up 1974 album “Queen II” that really catapulted them into the world of rock stardom. The album reached number 5 in the british Album charts and produced their first hit song “Seven Seas of Rhye”. From there Queen continued to release album after album, giving to the world monumental songs such as “Killer Queen”, “You’re My Best Friend”, “We Are the Champions”, “Fat Bottom Girls and of course the rock anthem ” Bohemian Rhapsody”. This success gifted them the opportunity to play at the 1985 Live Aid Concert held in Wembley Stadium, London. Queen played their greatest hits, to a crowed of 72,000 and was televised to 1.9 Billion people around the world, the largest ever televised concert. It has been hailed as the best rock performance of all time, and to this day stands as a testament to Freddy Mercury’s gift as a frontman.

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

It has been 3 years since his tragic death, but Michael Jacksons legacy lives on stronger than ever. Michael Jackson was the ultimate pop star. He could sing, dance, perform, write great music and managed to capture the hearts of his fans around the world.

Michael was born on the 29th of August 1958 in Gary, Indiana. Michael joined the Jackson 5 in 1964, spanning a successful career through to 1979. In 1979 Michael released his first solo album, “Off the Wall” which has since gone on to sell over 20 million copies world wide. Over the next 30 years Michael became a phenomenon. Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part II

Ok so its no Shawshank Redemption, it will never be placed alongside the Godfather, but the Twilight Saga is undeniably one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. Since 2008 Twilight-Fever has spread around the world, creating a huge and loyal fan base that rivals that of a certain boy wizard.

In the concluding part of the final instalment of the saga we catch up with Bella as she faces eternity as a newly bitten vampire. The Cullen family battle towards the final showdown against the Volturi whilst fighting to protect Renesmee, daughter of Bella and Edward.

With the Twilight-Hype-Machine in full swing it is hard not to get caught up and submerged in the excitement shared by millions around the world. Expect epic fight scenes between good and evil, long lingering romantic embraces and an abundance of bare chested werwolves.

Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part II is out November 16th

Life of Pi

Another adaptation of a novel, this time the award winning “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel. This magical coming-of-age adventure story is brought to life by acclaimed director Ang Lee, “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”, “Brokeback Mountain”.

Life of Pi, follows,..well….the life of Pi, a young boy stranded at sea on a life boat after a devastating storm sinks the cargo ship that he, his zookeeper parents and all their zoo animals were on headed from india to America. Pi is not alone on his lifeboat however, he is accompanied by a hyena, a zebra, an orang-utang and a 450-pound Bengal Tiger wonderfully named Richard Parker. Stranded at sea for a total of 227 days, Pi and crew are finally picked up by Japanese authorities. We find out about Pi’s outlandish experiences and adventures as he is interviewed by the Japanese officials.

The film itself sees the on screen debut of Suraj Sharma, who plays the young Pi, Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire) who plays the adult Pi, with support from Gerard Depardieu and Rafe Spall. From the trailer this look sleek it could be an magical film, what do you think?

Life of Pi is out December 21st

Frankenweenie

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” is my all time favourite Christmas movie, so when I heard Tim Burton was releasing a stop-motion film titled “The Corpses Bride” you can imagine my excitement. Sadly I was terribly disappointed. So when I heard the news on the grape vine that Burton was making a feature length adaptation of his first stop-motion project, the short film “Frankenweenie” I again felt that child like excitement grow.

“Frankenweenie” was a short film that became available on the special features of “The nightmare Before Christmas”. The feature length adaptation re-unites us with Victor and his beloved dog Sparky. However, when Sparky tragically dies, Victor is unable to let go, and therefor sets about raising Sparky from the grave, however Sparky is not the same dog anymore. After causing carnage amongst his neighbourhood Sparky is discovered and it doesn’t take long before others start to raise some dead of their own, with devastating consequences!

The trailer suggests that Burton has returned to form, combining his love of 50′s horror movies, all that is gothic and tragic whilst maintaining a heart warming and entertaining story. Definitely one to pop in the diary.

Frankenweenie is out October 17th

Skyfall

The names Bond……James bond! Yes Bond is back with Daniel Craig returning for his 3rd outing as the special agent, and it promises to be more action packed than ever!

Specific details surrounding the plot are very vague, yet there has been some rumours that this is going to be Bonds most personal mission yet, as a top secret sensitive MI6 file slips out of M’s grasp. Alongside Craig we see the return of Judi Dench as M, as well as newcomers Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris and Ben Whishaw who is playing the young master of gadgets, Q. No Bond film would be complete without a villain, and Skyfall has pulled out the big guns, with Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) playing the mysterious Silva.

Expect action, cars, gadgets and girls, this is going to be one hell of a ride!

Skyfall is out October 26th

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

After almost a decade since “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy ended, this winter we return to middle earth to find out how it all began, in “The Hobbit”. With Peter Jackson at the helm, “The Hobbit” is shaping up to be this winters big blockbuster. Originally meant to be one film, Jackson has now confirmed that The Hobbit will be split into two films, part 1 to be released this winter, part two the following winter.

The Hobbit is the story of Bilbo Baggins (played by Martin Freeman) who is tricked by Gandalf (Ian McKellan returns) into hosting a party for Thorin Oakenshield and his band of twelve dwarves. The band tell how they plot to reclaim their home under the Lonely Mountain and the treasure that it holds both stolen long ago by the fierce dragon Smaug. After much intimidation and persuasion the band along with Bilbo head of on their adventurous journey, meeting goblins, trolls, giant spiders and of course Smaug.

Most of the cast from the original trilogy are back, including new comers such as Richard Armitage and Billy Connolly. Jackson has been posting video diary’s from production and premisses never before seen technology and cinematic visuals. We are extremely excited about this one, and can’t wait to go back to middle earth, Christmas just hasn’t been the same with out it!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is out December 14th

Top Camera and Photo Apps – “Old Photo”

Featured

Welcome to the first of our Camera and Photo Apps blog series. Over the next few weeks Your Image on Canvas will be bringing you some of the best Photo and Camera Applications on the market. Photo apps are an excellent way of customising your best photos, to create something unique, fun and interesting. There are literally hundreds of apps available to mobile device users, so this blog series will only focus on the best to save you both time and money, ensuring you download only the cream of the crop.

We will not only review each app, but also give you an in-depth, step by step guide as to how to use them, to helping you gain the most from each app. So we hope that you come back each week to discover a new app and join in the fun of creating wonderful, creative photos!

Old Photo

Every wanted to create photos that look like they are straight from the old west, victorian times or even further back in time? Well Old Photo, by North Park is the App for you. We have had a lot of fun transforming everyday photos into old artefacts using this simple and easy to use camera application. We could talk about this app for hours, but its probably easier to show you what it can do.

Main Menu

Old Photo is a very simple to use app, as you can see by its main menu, below. You have two options here; either take a photo instantly using your devices built in camera or upload a photo from your devices memory/gallery.

We opted to take an image of the trees outside our office, as seen below.

Edit Photo

Once you have your chosen photo and press select, the app will transform it into an old fashion looking photo. This is a default setting but actually works rather well for very quick, instant photo transformations. However the real fun is editing the image to customise it the way that you wish. To do this select the “Edit” tab at the top of the screen, this will bring you to this screen.

From here you can adjust the following settings to create very realistic looking old photos.

Brightness

By selecting the Sun Icon, you can adjust the brightness of your image. Experiment between dark and light settings to find a balance that works for your image.

Contrast

The next setting is the Contrast Icon. You can use this to either create a nice soft look to your photo, or increase it to sharpen your image and make the blacks more prominent. Again, each photo is different and depending on the overall look you are trying to achieve you may find you need to increase or decrease the contrast.

Colour

By selecting the Colour Icon you can choose a colour filter for your image. As Old Photos generally take on a sepia filter, you are limited to browns, oranges and yellows, but these are all you really need to create realistic looking old fashion photos. Have a play around and chose a colour that suits your image.

Review

Overall we really like Old Photo. It is a simple and easy to use app that is very hands on. The results you can achieve are very realistic and the ability to edit and manipulate your photos makes this an extremely fun app to use. We found that the app is more suited to our door images, and requires good lighting in order to achieve the best results. Our only problem with the app was the size of the image on the edit screen. When editing your photo, it does not fill the screen, instead it takes on a very small, almost thumbnail sized image. This made it a little hard to see details in our photo, but once saved the image is stored as a full sized image and looks great!

Score

We gave Old Photo 7/10

Old Photo is a fantastic app, but a larger screen shot of the photo and perhaps a wider range of colour filters would have made this app a 10!

Next Time

Next week we will be looking at Photo Wonder, a very addictive and fun photo editing app.

Top Camera and Photo Apps – Edition 2 – “Photo Wonder”

Featured

Following the success of our first post in our Top Camera and Photo Apps series we are proud to bring you the second edition, this week looking at the amazing App “Photo Wonder”. Photo Apps on your mobile device are a great way to customise, personalise, edit and create fun, unique and inspiring photos. These Apps can be used separately or can be combined to create some fantastic results. Since our first post we have had a large volume of Canvas Prints that feature these kinds of Apps and we must say the results are spectacular.

This week we are looking at “Photo Wonder” from Baidu Int’l.Inc, which is a……well wonderful App that is easy to use, highly addictive and massive amounts of fun!

Photo Wonder

Once you have downloaded, installed and opened the App you will find yourself on the main menu screen. Here you will find four options, Edit, Collage, Review and Filter Camera.

Main Menu Screen

Photo Wonder App Main Menu

We will first look at Edit as this is the main focus of the App.

Edit

The Edit screen is where you will find all the tools needed to create your very own photo masterpieces. When you open the Edit screen you will be prompted to either take a photo using your devices camera or to load an existing photo from your devices memory. The lay out is very clean and easy to navigate, simply touch the effect or tool that you wish to alter and away you go.

Photo Wonder Edit Screen

Tone

First up is the tone tab, this allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast and saturation of your photo. Sometimes images can look a lot more crisp and clear when these three elements are tweaked. Have an experiment and find a level that works for your photo.

Photo Wonder Tone

Crop

The crop tool can be used to adjust the size of your photo, but can also be used to select certain parts of a photo that you wish to be the main focus. Using the crop tool in Photo Wonder is very straight forward, simply touch and drag one of the corners to adjust the size of the box, everything outside the box will be cut from the photo.

Photo Wonder Crop

Rotate

I really liked Photo Wonders rotate feature, not only does it have the usual ability to rotate the image clock or anti-clock wise, you can also flip the image so that you get a reversed, mirror type rotation. I thought this was very clever and is a feature not present in other Photo Apps we have seen.

Photo Wonder Rotate

Sharpen

The sharpen tool does just that, allows you to adjust how sharp the image looks. Again, experiment around and find settings that suit your photo.

Photo Wonder Sharpen

Beautify

The Beautify tab is where all the real fun starts with Photo Wonder. Here you can let your creative juices and imagination flow like a wild river!

Slim

The slim effect allows you to treat your subjects to an instant diet. Using the Slim effect is fun and easy, simply touch the part of your photo and drag to instantly knock a few pounds off. You can go as subtle or as extreme as you like, as you may have guessed we went with the latter.

Photo Wonder Slim

Larger Eyes

Got beautiful eyes you’d like to show off? Use the Larger Eyes tool to make them a littler bigger to draw attention to them, or as we did, go completely wild and give everybody huge big alien eyes!

Photo Wonder Eyes

Anti-Acne

Here’s one for the teens, forget all those creams, gels and facial wipes, simply use Photo Wonders Anti-Acne tool to get rid of any unwanted spots and blemishes. Simply touch the area you wish to clear up and Hey Presto! Another perfect Facebook Photo!

Photo Wonder Acne

Better Skin

Still not perfect? Want that glamour mag look? Then use the Better Skin tool to completely smooth and tone your skin to perfection! Just adjust the slider bar to create that angel soft smooth skin.

Photo Wonder Better Skin

Decorate

Ready to get really silly? Good because Decorate is a factory of madness allowing you to literally add anything to your photos. Add accessories, pranks, sticks and speech balloons to give your photos a really funny, cartoony twist!

Photo Wonder Decorate

Effect

In the Effects section you will see three tabs. The first is LOMO which basically gives you a bunch of photo filters very similar to those found on Instagram. The other two tabs are:

Scene

Which allows you to add effects such as this Snow effect, as wells as sun glare, stars and neon lights to mention but a few.

Photo Wonder Effect Snow

Art

The Art tab allows you to add effects such as this Sketch effect and this Warhol inspired Pop Art effect. We really liked this feature and can see it being a regular feature in our Instagrams from now on!

Frame

Finally you have the Frame section which allows you to add a variety of different frames and templates to your photo such as our favourite seen below!

Review

Overall we were very surprised by Photo Wonder. The Apps Icon in the App Store didn’t really appeal to me, it gave me the feeling that the app was going to be cheap, hard to use and a bit of a let down. Never has the saying “Never judge a book by its cover” been so fitting, for Photo Wonder is one of the best Photo Apps I have had the pleasure of reviewing. It is easy to navigate, simple to use and is full to the brim with features and functions, and whats more is that its COMPLETELY FREE!!

As mentioned above, the app comes with a whole host of tools and features but you can always download more from the store. However, saying that, I haven’t even played with all the features it comes with and its hardly left my hands all week!

Down sides? Well some of the tools can be a bit “fiddly” to use and if you have large fingers this may irritate a little but this was the only minor problem with the app that I could come up with. Some people have left comments on the store that the App sometimes closes without warning, but I have been playing with this pretty much non stop and I have not had a single problem, so perhaps and update has fixed that technical issue.

Score

We gave Photo Wonder 9/10

This App really is a must have and you will have so much fun experimenting with all the tools, features, functions and effects that this free App has to offer.

Next Time

Next week we will be looking at Photofunia, with a name like that you can guess what to expect!

Forget Jack Skeleton, Ray’s The Real Pumpkin King!

Featured

I had originally planned to do a “Top 10…” post on pumpkins for Halloween. That was until I discovered Ray Villafane. After viewing Ray’s gobsmacking gallery of carved pumpkins, it would no longer have been fair to create a “Top 10″ list, as all my entries would have been Ray’s!

Ray was born in Queens, New York and displayed exceptional artistic skills from a very young age. Throughout his early life Ray astounded his fellow students and teachers with his phenomenal abilities and natural talent. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1991, and pursued a career teaching art to children. It was during this time that Ray discovered pumpkin carving, incorporating it into his lessons with the children. Encouraged by his wife, Ray decided to take his Pumpkin Carving to the next level, offering his services on a commission basis and entering various competitions throughout the states. Ray has managed to build a large and loyal following, gaining exposure from top television programs, newspapers and websites. He continues to amaze the world with his incredible skills and talent.

Here are just a few of our favourite Pumpkin Sculptures by Ray.

Top Camera and Photo Apps – Edition 3 – “PhotoFunia”

Featured

Last week I reviewed Photo Wonder, a Photo App that I fell in love with, I literally didn’t put it down all week. That was until I downloaded PhotoFunia. PhotoFunia is the most fun you can possibly have on a mobile phone.

The App is very easy to use and comes packed to the rafters with features. In fact the App is so simple to use that there really is no need for me to write a guide on how to use it. Simply download and install, when you load the App up you will reach a screen with various categories. All you need to do is select a category, then select the effect, or template you wish to use. You will then be prompted to upload a photo from your gallery or take a photo using you devices camera. There is no need to make any adjustments, the App automatically recognises any face and adjusts it to suit the selected effect or template. Once the photo is created you can easily share the image to Facebook or Twitter, or save the image to your devices memory.

It is this simplicity, coupled with the hilarious results, that make this App such a pleasure to use. Below we have selected just a few of our favourite effects and templates, however there are over 300 to choose from. The app is free and in my opinion is better value than all of the paid Applications I have seen.

Check out some of the fun we have been having with PhotoFunia.

Wedding Photography Tips – Choosing The Right Lenses for Weddings

Featured

One of the most important aspects of wedding photography is which lens to use for each individual shot. Lens choice can have a massive impact on the final image, and so it’s important to really think about this in advance.

When Brenda and I shoot weddings we tend to approach each shot in one of three ways- we either take wide, mid, or tight shots, and the category of shot will usually dictate which lens we use. Wide shots are, as you would imagine, shots that take in a large amount of the scene. They are there to establish the ‘story’ and to give the photograph a lot of context. When you watch TV shows or movies you will often see these ‘wide’ shots at the beginning of the scene to establish the story. Once you have established the scene, you will then tend to go in for a ‘mid’ or even ‘tight’ shot. The purpose of these types of shot is to narrow the subject of the photograph down. They enable you to remove any distracting elements from the frame, especially when you shoot with a wide aperture. We use mid or tight shots to really capture the emotion in any scene.

Let’s look at some sample shots to illustrate how this works in practice.

Matt Foden Wedding Photography

Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 L (Image by Foden Photography)

This image, of the bride and her father walking down the aisle, is a typical ‘story telling’ wide image- the purpose of the image is to establish the story, and the context of the wedding ceremony. The image was shot with a general-purpose zoom lens, at 24mm. The Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 L is a great lens, as not only does it have a constant f2.8 aperture, it can also be used for wide, mid, and sometimes even tight shots. Over 60% of our images at weddings are taken with this lens.

Matt Foden Wedding Photography

Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 (Image by Foden Photograpghy)

You can see the sharp difference with this image. This is clearly a ‘tight’ shot. The emphasis has moved strictly towards the bride and groom. The longer focal length, enabled by the 70-200mm lens, coupled with the f3.5 aperture, has thrown the background out of focus. This image is all about capturing emotion, and the love between the bride and groom. If I had shot this with the 24-70, the image would have lost a lot of its impact.

Matt Foden Wedding Photography

Canon EF 50mm f1.4 (Image by Foden Photography)

This is essentially what I would call a ‘mid’ range shot. It does include some of the environment and context, but it’s clearly not a wide scene. For this image I shot with a prime lens, the 50mm f1.4, at an aperture of only f2. This has resulted in very shallow depth of field, and consequently a ‘dreamy’ effect that I think adds to the image. I love using prime lenses like this, but zoom lenses like the 24-70 are far more convenient!

The more practice and experience you get at shooting a wedding the better you become at judging which lens to use for each given scenario. Try to think about each wedding almost as a movie- one where you need a mixture of wide story-telling shots, combined with tighter shots to reveal the emotion, and you won’t go far wrong!

About Matt

Matt and his wife Brenda run Foden Photography, which is based in Surrey. They shoot weddings across the United Kingdom.

Top Camera and Photo Apps – Edition 4 – Camera 360 Ultimate

Featured

Hey folks, last week I was on holiday, so I apologize for the lack of a post. However I’m back with a vengeance this week looking at a Camera/Photo App that has been highly praised and highly recommended. The app is called Camera 360 Ultimate by PinGuo Inc. and is available on both Apple and Android devices.

When you first open Camera 360 Ultimate, you are greeted by the usual Camera/Photo App edit screen. You will find all the familiar options, take a photo, upload a photo, edit and effects. These are all well presented and easy to navigate. As mentioned if you have ever used a phone app you will be familiar with how all these functions work.

It is within the effects feature where this App really comes alive. There are many categories to choose from, each with several tiers of effects to utilise and manipulate your photo’s with. As always it is easier to show you these, rather than describe them so here are a few of my favourites.

Here is the original photo, which is an Instagram taken from where I live in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Original Photo Dean Path Edinburgh

Funny

Mirror Effect with Camera 360 Photo App

The “Funny” tab is maybe a bit misleading, you won’t find any “funny” glasses, hats or clown noses in this tab. No, the “funny” tab would be better titled, “Mirrors” as that is what you get. None-the-less you do get some nice mirror effects to play with, such as the one above. I could see these being used very creatively and in the right hands some truly outstanding results could be achieved.

1839

Old Fashion Camera Effect with Camera 360 Photo App

I actually really liked this effect, and thought it actually produced a better default result than the Old Photo App I reviewed a couple weeks ago. Simply apply the effect to your photo to immediately travel back to the 1800′s. Works brilliantly with architectural photos such as the one above.

DreamLike

Dreamlike filter effect with Camera 360

The Dreamlike effect applies a soft filter that washes over the photo, creating that vaseline on the lens effect from the days of old. It’s a nice effect and used tastefully, on a portrait photograph, could work very well in combination with other effects such as a sunlight effect.

Colourful

Colour Effects with Camera 360

Colour Effects with Camera 360

I’d say these are probably the strongest and most unique of the effects included in Camera 360 Ultimate. With the colour effects you can create some very dramatic images. Simply choose the filter you want to use and it is immediately applied to your photo. Bellow are two of my favourite colour effects.

Sketch

Sketch Effect with Camera 360

Sketch does what it says on the tin……well tries to. Usually you would have a series of effects that manipulate your photos to look like hand drawn sketches, pencil drawings or paintings. The sketch effects with camera 360 are a little week, and do not achieve their desired results as well as some other photo apps I have reviewed. Below is my favourite of a bad bunch, its called Surreal.

Light Colour

Light Effect with Camera 360

In Light Colour you will find a series of lighting effects, from sun beams to natural hazes. Again used appropriately these could really enhance a photo, but I still think Apps such as PhotoWonder and PhotoFunia achieve these with much better results?

Review

For a Photo App that calls itself Camera 360 Ultimate, there really is nothing ultimate about this App. It has lots of included effects to choose from, but in my opinion these are weak and often don’t live up to their description. It is an easy to use app, but I did encounter several problems with it. The main being that certain effects were lost when saving to my phones memory such as the Ghost effect. This is vey sad as the Ghost effect was my favourite and i really wanted to share it with you, but when i tried to save the Ghost would be lost! Also for some reason every time i saved it would also re-save a copy of my original photo, so i ended up with lots of the same image cluttering up my phone memory.

This is a nice App, but for me it didn’t fulfil its promise and left me wanting to go play with PhotoFunia some more!

Score

I have scored Camera 360 ultimate 5/10, nice for a free App, but there are better choices on the market.

So with out further a due, here is Christmas 2012′s 10 most wanted Toys!

Furby

(Best Price: £56.73 Ebay includes shipping)

2012 Furby Toys

What year is this 1998? Nope your not having a severe case of De Ja Vu, its 2012 and these wee blighters are back! I can still remember my little sister begging my parents for a Furby, her life wouldn’t be complete until she had a Furby to call her own. When Christmas came and she finally got her Furby she was over the moon. 6 months down the line, the thing was stuffed in some cupboard in the house, occasionally blurting out its Furbish obscenities.

So what’s new? Well the makers of Furby are pushing home the message that this time round your Furby will have a Mind and Personality of its own! The actual toy itself has had a make over, with softer more hair-like fur and the addition of a tail. The premise is still the same interact, talk, play, sing and teach your Furby new words. However advances in technology make this a much more enjoyable task as your Furby gradually gains a basic grasp of the English language. The big difference is the Personality aspect. Yes thats right your Furby will actually choose to like or dislike certain activities and will act accordingly, so you may end up with a delightful little chap or an obnoxious wee toe rag.

The newest feature is the addition of an App (Caching!!) for mobile devices which will heighten the level of interaction your child can have with their new furry little friends. These are going to be very popular this year so it is advised to get ordering early to avoid utter devastation on Christmas morning.

LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer

(Best Price: £64.79 Tescos)

When I was 5 years old, back in 1992, I was given a learning computer. It took the form of a laptop computer and was basically the size of your average washing machine. As for technology, well the fact that it took 3 days to start up to only allow me to play basic games of hangman, was painfully disappointing. This was before the internet was commercially available throughout UK homes, wow doesn’t that make you feel old, and I’m only 25!

Well as Dylan once said, “times they are a changin” and now children have access to better computers than my Dad did when I was a child. So what is the LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer and why should you get one for your child? Well LeapPad2 is the I-Pad of the child’s educational computer devices. It takes on a familiar and contemporary tablet form and allows your child to learn and have fun at the same time. Complete with two built in digital cameras and the ability to record video, LeapPad2 combines interactive games with high quality learning material and problem solving puzzles.

It comes with a basic package of Apps, but these can be added to by downloading from the catalogue of over 325 game cartridges and Apps available to download online.

Hot Wheels R/C Terrain Twister Vehicle

(Best Price: £50 Amazon)

hot wheels remote controlled car

OK Now we’re talking business, nothing pleases man more than something that can be controlled by remote control. Since 1968 Hot Wheels have lead the way in the toy car market. Their toys are so good they should be regularly reviewed by Clarkson on BBC’s Top Gear. If you haven’t guess by now, I am a big fan of Hot Wheels toys, and it is one of the main reasons that i wish to have a son, so I can have a valid excuse to once again play with these fantastic toys for hours on end.

So lets look at the latest bad boy in the collection, the Terrain Twister, even the name suggests this isn’t one for girls. The Terrain Twister is a remote controlled car with a difference, that being the lack of wheels! What! No Wheels I hear you ask! Thats right, where we’re going we don’t need wheels, and where we’re going is any place we want!! Woohaaa! The Terrain Twister has two large Corkscrews instead of wheels, which allows it it scramble over any kind of terrain. According to the packaging it can go over dirt, grass, sand water? and even snow! It has a range of up to 20 meters and is available in a range of colours, i for one will be getting one of each…….for my nephew……..

Barbie Sisters Cruise Ship

(Best Price: £65.41 Pluck Point)

Barbie Cruise Ship Toy

Wow……so……don’t really know where to begin with this one, as you may have gathered by now Barbie’s weren’t that high up on my Christmas lists as a child. None-the-less this is a guide to help you the parents so I will do my best.

So unless you have been living under a rock for…..well….ever! you will already know who Barbie is. So in their endless crusade to find new and appealing jobs, adventures and social scenarios the Barbie empire have this time opted to let the little lady have some relaxing time off, on her very own cruise ship!

What you get here is a fold out cruise ship complete with, pool, two water slides, swing, buffet accessories (kitchen staff not included), two fold-down beds, two lounge chairs, one side table, two pillows and two blankets. The actual Barbie dolls are not included. I’m sure this will be on every little girls wish list, and there is enough here for their imaginations to run wild.

Imperial Toy Zooma Splat X Smack Shot

(Best Price: £9.99 Amazon)

splat x smack-shot toy

The once humble sling shot has come along way since the days of using a twig and the cut off of an old rubber wellie-boot. The Zooma Splat X Smack Shot is the Daddy of sling shots and boy is it fun!

The concept is simple; load the Zooma Smack Shot with one of the sticky rubber Strike Shots, pull it back and let go to launch your attack. The ammo can reach distances of 100ft! and when it hits a hard shiny surface it will stick. Now, that by itself is enough fun to keep any man-child occupied for weeks, but the Zooma has one more feature that amplifies the fun by 100%, an LED target locater. Think predator, you now have the ability to laser sight your target for precision targeting, one word springs to mind, Awesome!

The Zooma Splat x Smack Shot comes with 3 performance and 3 sticky strike shots and cell batteries are included. This is a sure fire winner and is definitely going on my Christmas list, forget the Georgio Armani aftershave shooting things with a laser sight is much more satisfying.

Nintendo Wii U Console

(Best Price: £244.95 Video Game Box)

nintendo wii u games console

Now, I can’t lie, I’m a Playstation man through and through have been since it launched in the UK back in 1995. However, I have played the Wii and out of all Playstation’s competitors did think that the Wii was at least bringing something new to the table.

With the Wii U you get the new look Wii console complete with Miiverse and Nintendo eShop. (Playstation Home and Store for those that speak Playstation.) and one Wii U gamepad. It is the gamepad that is going to cause the most excitement. The gamepad is Nintendo’s version of Playstation’s PSP (que Nintendo fans outrage!) allowing users to engage with their Wii games in a new fashion. It has a 6.2 inch touch sensitive screen, built in camera and microphone, built in speakers, as well as the ability to control your television and TV recorder.

The Wii U is to launch on the 30th of November and has some great games due at the same time including New Super Mario Bros U and the widely anticipated Call of Duty Black Ops II. There is no denying the fun and innovation that Nintendo continues to deliver so perhaps this will be the first console to lead to my first gaming affair, sorry Playstation I didn’t mean it!

1D Collectors Dolls

(Best Price: £18 Ebay)

One Direction Toy Dolls

Considering I found it incredibly hard to write about Barbie and her luxury cruise liner, I am now going to have to muster all my strength and decency in order to spill out a few words about this next toy. So you may or may not have heard of a small musical act from the UK called One Direction? yeah me neither. Apparently they are quite big in the states? Some going as far to compare them to The Beatles? Sacrilege!

Ok so they have done well for themselves, for a band (and I use that term loosely) that came third in the X-Factor, these 5 boys have somehow managed to concur the world and with it the hearts of every female under the age of 20 along the way. They have released the album, had the hit singles, played the big arenas, concurred the states, topped both UK and US charts so merchandise is really the only thing left to add to that list of conquests.

So here you have it, the official One Direction Collectors Dolls, as much as it pains me, these are going to be frighteningly popular, hysteria will ensue and any girl that does’t wake on Christmas day to their own miniature-direction will make sure you know all about it! You have been warned!

Tabeo 7 Inch Kids Tablet

(Best Price: £131 Ebay)

tabeo kids tablet computer

Right, another Tablet computer aimed at children, sadly the days of climbing tree’s and playing british bulldogs are dead and gone, children have agendas, emails, important conference calls and documents to create.

The Tabeo is more like an actual Tablet than the LeapFrog LeapPad which is more of an educational tool. The Tabeo uses the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system and has over 7,000 free, child safe apps and games available for download. It has built in speakers, microphone, G-Sensor and front facing camera. This looks and feels a lot more like an actual adult Tablet. Before you ask, yes, the Tabeo has complete internet safety controls allowing you, the parent, to control exactly what your child can access and when they can access it.

Of the two Tablet’s featured on this list, I’d be more inclined to buy my child the Tabeo, as this just seems like more fun, and it comes pre-loaded with Angry Birds and that game alone is worth the money!

Y-Volution Yfliker F1 Scooter

(Best Price: £64.99 Toys’R'Us)

Y-Volution Scooter

Remember when the micro-scooter burst on the scene in the late 90′s? Everyone had one (not me, I was a skateboarder and owning a scooter would have been a crime punishable by death). I remember being in London and seeing a fully suited gentleman riding down the street on one with his briefcase in one hand and his Financial Times under the other arm.

Recently the micro-scooter has been making a bit of a come back, and new models are surfacing such as the Y-Volution Yfliker F1. From what I gather this is more like a snake board (remember them?) crossed with a scooter. Unlike a scooter you ride this more like you would a pair of Ski’s carving from side to side in order to gain momentum and speed. There is also a break so you can slow down. I have already seen a few of these on the streets of Edinburgh, and from the expressions on the faces of those riding them, they look like good fun.

Top Camera and Photo Apps – Edition 5 – Lomo Camera

Featured

Last week I looked at 360 Camera, although the app had some nice features I felt it lacked the quality and substance to make it a great photo app. Continuing our Top Camera and Photo Apps blog series, this week I am looking at Lomo Camera by White Shark Software.

Lomographic cameras are designed to produce photographic effects such as over-saturation, optical distortions, rainbow-colored subjects, off-kilter exposure, blurring and alternative film processing, all things usually considered faux-pas in photography.

Retro cameras and Lomographic techniques are very much the “in-thing” at the moment and most camera apps come with these effects built in. So I was keen to download a Lomo specific camera app to see if the results produced are any better than those commercially available in apps such as Instagram.

Lomo Camera

Lomo Camera is a free camera app available across all mobile platforms. The device that I use for the purpose of these reviews and guides is the HTC One X. The app is very quick to load, and gets straight to the action. The first screen you are brought to is the camera selection screen. From here you can select which type of camera you wish to use for your photo. The three free options that come with the app are:

Lomo Camera

Old Camera

Underwater Camera

Next you can choose two additional effects to apply to your image, these come under two categories:

Print/Film Effect

Lomo Camera - Print/Film Effects

Filter Effect

Lomo Camera - Filter Effects

You can be quite creative here, so take some time to experiment with the various effects and cameras to discover settings that work for your shot.

Here are a few of my favourites used to capture the tree’s outside Your image on Canvas HQ.

Review

So, having played about with Lomo Camera all morning, I have managed to create some interesting shots. There is a lot of room here for experimentation, the various combinations of effects and filters can make for some truly creative and unique results. I am a big fan of Lomography so I was excited to get this app and start using it.

What wasn’t explained in the description of the app, is that it only comes with three actual cameras. There’s an additional six cameras that you can download but you will need to pay for them! I find this slightly disappointing, firstly because other apps, such as the Fantastic PhotoFunia, come loaded with features and remain free, and secondly because the quality of the effects and filters in Lomo Camera simply don’t merit paying for them.

There were other aspects I didn’t like, these included, the menu screens occasionaly sticking and failing to change, no ability to load photos from your gallery to edit within the app and the fact that many of the effects produce almost identical results?

Lomo Camera is good, not great and certainly not outstanding but, as you can see, does allow you to experiment and produce some nice results. I would have liked the whole app, additional six cameras, for free as I don’t believe the quality is there to justify parting with any money, especially when many of the effects and filters are available for free within apps such as Instagram.

Score

I have Scored Lomo Camera 5/10, not enough free features and a lack of any notable quality.

Top Camera and Photo Apps – Edition 6 “PicsArt”

Featured

This week on our Top Camera and Photo Apps blog series we are looking at PicsArt. PicsArt is a rival to Instagram, providing a platform for users to take, create, upload and share their photos with the world. It is exclusively available for Android users, has been downloaded 30,000,000 times and has just celebrated its first year as an App.

Unlike Instagram, you don’t need to create an account in order to use this app for editing your photos. From what I have seen creating an account grants you access to an experience somewhere between Instagram and Pinterest, allowing you to share your photos, but also view and browse other users photos through a social network experience.

So lets have a look at what this app offers in the way of photo editing. When you first open the app you will be directed to the main menu screen as seen below.

PicsArt Photo App Home Screen

From here you can navigate to the various options and features available. For the purpose of showing you exactly what this App offers we will look at the Photo/Effects options, as this is where you can edit and create your photographic masterpieces.

When you click Photo or FX you will be prompted to take or upload a photo, as always I call upon my wonderful stock image model. You will then be taken to this screen, which is the main editing screen.

PicsArt Edit Screen

The first option, as with most photo apps, is the crop function. Here you can crop your images in several ways, theres some unique options here like the one seen below.

PicsArt Crop Options

The next editing tab is the FX section and as with all photo apps, this is where you will have the most fun, creating your unique images and photos.

PicsArt FX Screen

I was really surprised by how much is offered by this free photo app, PicsArt have delivered a wide range of effects and editing options all of which look great! Lets look at some of my favourites.

Artistic

The first FX option is the Artistic tab, here you can chose from a a number of artistic effects to customise your photo with. All though the pre-sets work brilliantly, you can edit each and every one of the effects, a feature not present on Instagram. Below are two of my favourite Artistic FX:

PicsArt Neon FX

PicsArt Fattal 1 FX

Pop Art

Next up is the Pop Art tab, pretty self explanatory, these effects will transform any photo into a wonderful Warhol style piece of Pop Art. My favourite is the 3D/Hologram effect as seen below:

PicsArt Pop Art FX

PicsArt Pop Art FX

Paper

The Paper FX tab allows you to customise your photos so that they look like they have been stenciled onto various materials such as paper, wood and brickwork. These effects work very nicely and the results are very convincing. As with all PicsArt effects, each of these can be edited to be more or less prominent.

PicsArt Paper Art FX

Colour Adjust

In the Colour Adjust tab, you will find various colouring options, from black and white to saturation and hue options. By experimenting with the editing features of each, you can create some dramatic results, so have a play around!

PicsArt Colour FX

Distort

Distort allows you to really mess with your photo to create results like these seen below. There are various mirror effects, but my favourite is the caricature effect, which allows you to create very funny results.

PicsArt Distort FX

PicsArt Distort FX

Colour Splash

The Colour Splash tab gives you various options to either enhance  remove or add colour to your photographs. You can use editing options on each effect to either isolate certain colours or completely change the colouring of your photo.

PicsArt Colour Splash FX

Correction

I really loved this section, basically it gives you the options to correct certain elements that may be present in your photograph such as red eye, spots and blemishes and pale complexion. So now you too can look as shiny and perfect as your favourite photoshopped   celebrities! Or, as I have done below, just have fun mucking about with eye colours and bad fake tans!

PicsArt Correction FX

PicsArt Correction FX

As well as the FX there are various other features you can use to edit your photos, such as:

Callout – Add speech bubbles

Test – Add Text

Draw – Doodle over your photo

Sticker – Add Stickers such as glasses and love hearts.

Clip Art – Add clip art images

The best however are the Masks tab, which allows you to add effects filters such as light glares and stars to your photo.

Review

I really like PicsArt, I think its a true contender to Instagrams throne. The app itself is completely free and comes with a lot more functionality and features than Instagram. In terms of ease of use I would say that Instagram is more basic, but this is only because PicsArt offers more in the way of editing. The quality of each effect and editing tool are up there with the best photo apps that I have seen. Although I didn’t create an account i did browse a few other users profils and it seems like this is a really fun community to be apart of, with more creativity and artistic flare being displayed than on Instagram.

Score

I have decided to score PicsArt 10/10, because I really couldn’t fault this photo app, and it is offering a lot more for free than a lot of top paid apps.
